1. Check for Unnatural Facial Features and Movement
The eyes are often the first place a deepfake fails. Look for irregular blinking patterns—either too much, too little, or not at all. AI models also struggle to replicate the natural physics of light, so watch for odd reflections in a person's eyes or on their
glasses. Skin texture can be another giveaway; it might appear unnaturally smooth, like plastic, or too wrinkly for the person's age. The edges of the face, especially around the hair and jawline, can appear blurry, distorted, or seem to flicker as the person moves. Even a person's head movement can seem off, appearing stiff or disconnected from their body, as if it's floating.
2. Listen for Audio and Lip-Sync Errors
Your ears can be just as important as your eyes. A common flaw in deepfake videos is poor synchronization between the audio and the speaker's lip movements. If the words don't perfectly match the mouth, be skeptical. The voice itself can also sound robotic, flat, or emotionally disconnected from the words being spoken. AI-generated audio may lack the subtle background noises you'd expect in a real recording or have strange artifacts like clicks, warbles, or sudden silences. Another tell is a lack of natural breathing sounds; the cadence might feel stilted because the audio was created in chunks and stitched together.
3. Examine the Lighting, Shadows, and Background
Deepfake software often focuses on manipulating the face but neglects the surrounding environment. Check if the lighting on the person's face matches the rest of the scene. For instance, if the room is dimly lit but their face is brightly illuminated, that's a major red flag. Shadows can also be inconsistent, appearing in the wrong places or failing to move correctly as the subject moves. The background itself might contain clues. Look for flickering, warped lines, or blurred areas, particularly around the outline of the subject. Sometimes, generative AI struggles with fine details, causing objects in the background to distort unnaturally.
4. Pay Attention to Awkward Body Language
While AI has become adept at faking faces, it often struggles with the rest of the body. Look for awkward or jerky motions that don't seem natural. The connection between the head and the body might seem disjointed, especially during quick turns. Technology has a notoriously difficult time rendering hands, so check for strangely shaped fingers or unnatural hand movements. Facial expressions may also seem disconnected from the person's body language or the tone of their speech. If someone is delivering an angry message but their posture is relaxed, this emotional mismatch could signal a fake.
5. Question the Context and Verify the Source
Ultimately, the most powerful tool against deepfakes is critical thinking. Before you believe a shocking video, pause and ask yourself if the content seems plausible. Does the message align with what you know about the person or organization? Scammers often use deepfakes to create a sense of urgency, pressuring you to act quickly by sending money or revealing personal information. Always verify the source. Instead of trusting a video from an unverified account, search for the same story from multiple credible news outlets. If a supposed relative contacts you through a new number with an urgent plea, try contacting them through a channel you already trust to confirm it's really them.
