Forget the All-or-Nothing Mindset
During festive periods, our schedules are packed with social events, travel, and preparations, making a regular 60-minute gym session feel impossible. The common response is to give up entirely, promising to restart in the new year. This all-or-nothing
approach is where we go wrong. The new festive routine is built on a different philosophy: consistency over intensity. Instead of aiming for perfect, long workouts, the goal is to weave manageable pockets of movement into your day. This strategy helps maintain your fitness baseline, boosts energy levels, and reduces the stress that often accompanies the season, allowing you to enjoy the celebrations more fully.
The Foundational Power of Walking
Walking is the cornerstone of this realistic routine because of its accessibility and low impact. It's a simple yet powerful tool for maintaining cardiovascular health and managing festive indulgences. Aim for purposeful walks rather than just aimless strolls. This could be a brisk 20-minute walk first thing in the morning to energise your day, a post-meal walk with family to aid digestion and help manage blood sugar levels, or parking further away when you go shopping. Combining walking with more intense exercise ensures you get both aerobic and anaerobic benefits. During the holidays, walking can also become a festive activity itself—think of exploring a decorated neighbourhood or taking a family walk in a local park.
Short Workouts, Significant Impact
When you only have a little time, short, high-intensity workouts are incredibly effective. Research shows that multiple short bouts of exercise, even just 10-15 minutes, can be as beneficial as one long session. These brief workouts, often called High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), elevate your heart rate quickly and boost your metabolism. You don't need any equipment. A simple 15-minute bodyweight circuit can include exercises like squats, push-ups, lunges, planks, and jumping jacks. Performing these movements in quick succession for 30-40 seconds with short rests in between creates an efficient, full-body workout that you can do anywhere, even in a guest room while travelling.
Harnessing Everyday Movement (NEAT)
Perhaps the most realistic component of this routine is embracing Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis, or NEAT. This is the energy you burn doing everything that isn't formal exercise. It includes activities like doing household chores, taking the stairs, fidgeting, cooking, and even playing with children or pets. During the festive season, opportunities for NEAT are everywhere. Instead of sitting down to chat, suggest a standing conversation. Offer to help with cleaning and preparations, which often involve bending, lifting, and scrubbing. Consciously choosing to move more in these small ways can significantly contribute to your total daily energy expenditure and counter the effects of being more sedentary.
Creating Your Daily Festive Blend
The key to this routine is flexibility. It’s about mixing and matching these three elements to fit your specific schedule each day. A sample day might look like this: start with a 15-minute bodyweight circuit in the morning. In the afternoon, instead of driving to a nearby shop, walk there. In the evening, after a festive dinner, suggest a 20-minute walk with your family. On a particularly busy day, you might skip the formal workout but make an extra effort to increase your NEAT by taking multiple trips to carry things, using the stairs exclusively, and stretching during breaks. By focusing on achieving a blend of movement each day, you build a sustainable habit that keeps you feeling strong and vibrant throughout the holidays and beyond.
