The first step towards a career in space science begins long before university. To keep your options open, you must select the science stream after Class 10, focusing on Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM). These subjects are the fundamental building
blocks for nearly all engineering and research roles in the space sector. A strong grasp of these core subjects is essential for cracking the entrance exams that serve as gateways to premier technical institutes across the country. While not always mandatory, having computer science as an additional subject can provide a significant advantage, given the increasing role of software and data analysis in space missions.
The Undergraduate Degree: Your Launchpad
After Class 12, the most common route to a career at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is by pursuing a Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) or Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) degree. ISRO primarily recruits engineers from specific disciplines. The most sought-after branches include Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace/Aeronautical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, and Computer Science Engineering. To be eligible for recruitment, ISRO generally requires a minimum aggregate of 65% marks or a CGPA of 6.84 out of 10 from a recognized university. For those more inclined towards research, a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) followed by a Master of Science (M.Sc) in fields like Physics, Astrophysics, or Mathematics can also lead to scientific roles within the organisation.
The Direct Path: Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST)
For aspiring space scientists, the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST) in Thiruvananthapuram is a prime institution. Functioning under the Department of Space, IIST offers undergraduate (B.Tech) and Dual Degree (B.Tech + M.S./M.Tech) programs in areas directly relevant to space science, such as Aerospace Engineering and Electronics and Communication Engineering (Avionics). Admission to IIST is highly competitive and is based on the rank secured in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced. One of the biggest advantages of studying at IIST is its direct link to ISRO. Based on vacancies and academic performance (typically a CGPA of 7.0 or above), graduates may be recruited directly as Scientist/Engineer 'SC' into various ISRO centres.
Joining ISRO: The Recruitment Process
There are two primary methods for engineers to join ISRO. The first is through the ISRO Centralised Recruitment Board (ICRB) exam. This is a direct written test for graduates in specified engineering disciplines, followed by a personal interview. The second popular method, which ISRO has been using to fast-track recruitment, is based on the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) score. For this route, candidates are shortlisted for an interview based on their valid GATE scores in their respective engineering fields. For both pathways, the interview is a crucial stage where senior scientists assess a candidate's fundamental knowledge and problem-solving skills.
Beyond Engineering: Other Roles at ISRO
While engineers form the core of its technical workforce, ISRO is a large organisation with a need for diverse talent. There are opportunities for scientists with Master's degrees or PhDs in Physics, Astronomy, and Mathematics who contribute to research and development. Furthermore, ISRO also recruits for technical assistant roles for diploma holders and technician positions for ITI certificate holders. The administrative backbone of the organisation requires professionals too, with positions like Administrative Officer, Accounts Officer, and Assistants being filled through separate recruitment drives.
The New Frontier: India’s Private Space Sector
A career in space is no longer limited to ISRO. India's space sector has seen explosive growth with over 400 private startups now active. Companies like Skyroot Aerospace, which has already launched a private rocket, Agnikul Cosmos, Pixxel, and Dhruva Space are hiring aggressively. These firms are involved in building launch vehicles, satellite constellations, and providing data analytics services. They offer fast-paced environments where engineers can gain hands-on experience in building and testing hardware. These startups hire for similar roles as ISRO, including propulsion, avionics, GNC (Guidance, Navigation, and Control), and software engineers, often offering competitive salaries and the chance to be part of a rapidly growing industry.
