Your Guide to Festival Special Trains
To manage the massive surge in travellers, Indian Railways announces thousands of 'Festival Special' trains every year. For October 2026, multiple zones including Northern, Central, and Southern Railways have already announced hundreds of special services
connecting major hubs with destinations in West Bengal, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and beyond. These trains often have '0' as the starting digit in their numbers and are announced in batches. Key routes with special services include Delhi to Kolkata and Patna, Mumbai to Gorakhpur and Howrah, and Bengaluru to Kolkata. Keep an eye on the official IRCTC website, the NTES app, and news updates from zonal railways, as more trains are added based on demand right through the season.
Mastering the Art of Booking
Getting a confirmed ticket during the festival rush is the biggest hurdle. The golden rule is to book as soon as the reservation window opens. For last-minute plans, the Tatkal quota is your best bet, opening at 10 AM for AC classes and 11 AM for non-AC classes one day before the journey. To improve your chances, use IRCTC's 'Master List' feature to pre-fill passenger details. Ensure your IRCTC account is linked with your Aadhaar, as this is now mandatory for Tatkal bookings. For payment, use UPI or the IRCTC wallet for the fastest transaction, as bank gateways can be slow during peak traffic. If your desired train is full, check for services to nearby, less popular stations, which might have better availability.
Navigating the Station Chaos
Major railway stations like New Delhi, Howrah, CSMT, and Anand Vihar will be extremely crowded. Arrive at the station at least an hour earlier than you normally would. Packing light will make it significantly easier to navigate packed platforms and find your coach. Before leaving home, double-check your train's platform number on the NTES app or by calling the RailMadad helpline at 139. Platform numbers can change at the last minute, and being prepared helps avoid a frantic rush. If you have friends or family seeing you off, ensure they have platform tickets to avoid fines.
Staying Safe and Comfortable Onboard
Once on the train, your journey's comfort is in your hands. Secure your luggage with a chain and lock, especially on overnight journeys. If you have an upper berth, you are less likely to be disturbed by movement in the aisle. While food is available on most long-distance trains, it's wise to carry some of your own snacks and a water bottle. For hygiene, a small kit with hand sanitiser, tissues, and soap is essential. Keep your phone and wallet secure at all times. From October 1, 2026, railway authorities are conducting intensive ticket-checking drives. Ensure you carry an original, valid ID like an Aadhaar card, PAN card, or Voter ID, as digital copies may not be accepted and the penalty for ticketless travel has been increased to a minimum of Rs 500.
