Understanding Post-Workout Soreness
That familiar stiffness you feel a day or two after a strenuous workout is called Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness, or DOMS. It’s the result of microscopic tears in your muscle fibres, which triggers an inflammatory response from your body as it works to repair
the damage. This inflammation is a normal and necessary part of getting stronger, but it's also what causes pain and reduced muscle function, making it hard to even walk down stairs, let alone hit the gym again. While many people reach for over-the-counter pain relievers, a growing body of research suggests a natural alternative may help take the edge off.
The Power of Anthocyanins
Tart cherries, particularly the Montmorency variety, are packed with powerful plant compounds called polyphenols. The most important among these are anthocyanins, the pigments that give the fruit its deep, ruby-red colour. These anthocyanins are potent antioxidants and have strong anti-inflammatory properties. When you exercise intensely, your body produces oxidative stress, a process that can contribute to muscle damage. The anthocyanins in tart cherry juice work to counteract this effect, acting as a cellular cleanup crew to neutralize harmful molecules and protect your muscles.
How It Works: Reducing Inflammation
The primary way tart cherry juice aids recovery is by moderating the body's inflammatory response. Instead of completely blocking inflammation—which is crucial for long-term adaptation and muscle growth—the anthocyanins help to regulate it. Studies show that consuming tart cherry juice can lead to lower levels of key inflammatory markers, such as c-reactive protein, in the blood after exercise. By turning down the volume on excessive inflammation, these compounds help reduce secondary muscle damage, which means less pain and a quicker return to full strength.
What the Research Shows
Multiple scientific studies have demonstrated the benefits of tart cherry juice for athletes. Research on marathon runners, cyclists, and strength-trained individuals has consistently shown positive effects. One study on long-distance runners found that those who drank tart cherry juice before and after their event reported significantly less pain compared to a placebo group. Another study showed that strength loss after an intense workout was only 4% in a group consuming cherry juice, compared to 22% in the placebo group. The evidence suggests that it helps accelerate the recovery of muscle function, reduces soreness, and preserves strength.
How to Use It for Best Results
To get the most benefit, timing and dosage are key. Most studies use a protocol where participants begin drinking the juice a few days before a strenuous workout or event and continue for a couple of days after. This 'precovery' approach allows the beneficial compounds to build up in your system. The standard recommendation is typically two servings per day of about 30ml of unsweetened tart cherry juice concentrate mixed with water. It's important to choose a juice made from tart cherries like Montmorency, as sweet cherry varieties contain lower levels of the active anti-inflammatory compounds. Tart cherries are also a natural source of melatonin, which may improve sleep quality—another crucial component of effective recovery.
