A Direct Connection At Last
The Ministry of Railways has officially approved the Surat-Udaipur City Vande Bharat Express, a move celebrated by residents of both states. This new service marks Surat's first Vande Bharat train and Gujarat's sixth, signifying a major upgrade in the region's
rail infrastructure. The train, numbered 26903/26904, is expected to commence operations before the Navratri festival, tapping into the high demand for travel during the festive season. It replaces and extends the route of the former Udaipur City-Asarva Vande Bharat, which has been discontinued, creating a longer and more strategic connection between southern Gujarat and Rajasthan.
The Journey Deconstructed
Designed for speed and comfort, the eight-coach train will run six days a week, with no service on Tuesdays for maintenance. The journey will cover approximately 690 kilometres in just seven and a half hours, a significant improvement over the 8-9 hour road journey. Train number 26903 is scheduled to depart from Surat at 6:10 AM, arriving in Udaipur City at 1:40 PM. For the return leg, train number 26904 will leave Udaipur City at 3:35 PM and pull into Surat at 11:00 PM. This convenient schedule allows for a full day of activities upon arrival in either city.
Key Stops Along the Way
The route has been planned to maximize connectivity across key commercial and cultural towns. Major commercial stoppages between Surat and Udaipur City include Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Maninagar, Asarva, Himmatnagar, Shamlaji Road, Dungarpur, and Zawar. These stops provide a direct rail link for passengers from central and south Gujarat to southern Rajasthan, a region previously connected by slower or less direct travel options. The primary maintenance for the train will be handled at Surat, ensuring operational efficiency.
A Boost for Tourism and Trade
This new train is much more than a convenience; it's an economic catalyst. For tourists in Gujarat, the majestic lakes and palaces of Udaipur are now a comfortable train ride away, perfect for a long weekend. The direct link is expected to provide a significant impetus to tourism in the entire Mewar region of Rajasthan. Simultaneously, it will facilitate smoother travel for the business community. Traders from Surat's bustling diamond and textile industries can more easily connect with suppliers, artisans, and markets in Rajasthan, strengthening commercial ties between the two powerhouse states.
What Travelers Can Expect
The Vande Bharat Express is known for its modern amenities, offering a more comfortable and faster alternative to conventional trains and buses. Passengers can expect chair-car style seating in both AC and non-AC configurations, providing a premium travel experience. This service is not just about reducing travel time but also about enhancing the quality of the journey. By making travel safer, more convenient, and more comfortable, the train is set to become the preferred mode of transport for thousands of passengers travelling between Gujarat and Rajasthan.
