Widespread Rains Across the State
Residents across Maharashtra, particularly in Mumbai and the Konkan region, woke up to intense rainfall today, June 29. [12] Intense showers lashed Mumbai's suburbs overnight, with some areas like Mulund and Versova recording over 150 mm of rain in just
a few hours. [12, 17] This sudden surge in monsoon activity has led to familiar scenes of waterlogging on major roads like LBS Road and in the Andheri subway, causing traffic disruptions. [12, 28] The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had forecast a fresh spell of heavy showers beginning around June 29, and the predictions have materialized with significant downpours. [14] The rainfall marks a vigorous phase of the monsoon, which had a delayed and staggered start earlier in the month. [19, 23]
The Science Behind the Downpour: An Active Trough
The primary cause for this intensification is the activation of a monsoon trough, a low-pressure area that is a classic feature of the season. An offshore trough running along India's west coast has become more pronounced, pulling in moisture-laden southwesterly winds from the Arabian Sea. [14] When these winds hit the Western Ghats, they are forced to rise, cool, and release their moisture as heavy rainfall. This meteorological setup is responsible for the widespread and heavy rain currently being experienced over Konkan, Goa, and parts of Madhya Maharashtra. IMD Issues Yellow and Orange Alerts
In response to the weather patterns, the IMD has issued a series of alerts for various districts. A yellow alert, indicating a need to 'be updated', has been issued for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and Raigad through July 2, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds. [11, 15] Some reports from June 28 indicated an orange alert for Mumbai and Thane, which signifies a higher level of preparedness for heavy rainfall that could disrupt daily life. [7, 8] The alerts extend to other parts of the state as well, with yellow alerts in place for districts in North Maharashtra, Marathwada, and Vidarbha, where thunderstorms and moderate rain are expected. Impact on Mumbai, Pune, and Konkan
In Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is on alert as the overnight downpour caused waterlogging in low-lying areas. [12] While suburban train services have not reported major disruptions, road traffic has been slow in affected pockets. [8] Pune also received spells of rain, bringing relief after a relatively dry week, though catchment areas for the city's dams have yet to see significant rainfall. [27] The Konkan coast, historically prone to intense monsoon spells, is on high alert. [9] Heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast for the Konkan and Goa region over the coming days, and fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea due to rough conditions and high wind speeds. With heavy rain expected to continue, authorities have issued safety advisories for citizens. The most critical advice is to avoid waterlogged areas, as wading through floodwaters can be dangerous due to open manholes and submerged debris. [10] It is also wise to check for traffic updates before commuting and to allow for extra travel time. Residents in low-lying areas are advised to take precautions against localised flooding. During thunderstorms, it is safest to stay indoors and away from windows. Avoid taking shelter under trees, as they are susceptible to lightning strikes.
