Why Festive Season Travel is Different
During peak travel periods like Diwali, Christmas, and New Year, airlines operate at maximum capacity. This has a direct impact on your cabin baggage. With every seat filled, the competition for overhead bin space becomes intense. Gate agents and cabin crew
are often much stricter about enforcing size and weight limits to ensure all passengers can be accommodated and flights can depart on time. A bag that might have been overlooked on a quieter day could be flagged, forcing you to check it in at the last minute and often at a high cost. Understanding the exact rules is your best defence against unexpected fees and travel stress.
IndiGo: The 7kg Standard
As India's largest domestic carrier, IndiGo's rules are the ones most travellers will encounter. For all economy fares, passengers are allowed one piece of cabin baggage with a maximum weight of 7 kg. The dimensions must not exceed 55 cm in length, 35 cm in width, and 25 cm in height. In addition to this main bag, passengers can carry one personal item, like a small laptop bag or a lady's handbag, weighing up to 3 kg. IndiGo is known for being quite strict with its weight limits, so it's wise to weigh your bag at home before leaving for the airport.
Air India: A Bit More Generous
The nation's flag carrier, Air India, offers a slightly more generous allowance for economy class passengers on domestic routes. You are permitted one piece of hand baggage weighing up to 8 kg. The dimensional limits are a height of 55 cm, a length of 35 cm, and a width of 25 cm. Business and First Class passengers have a higher allowance of 12 kg. Like other airlines, Air India also allows for a small personal item in addition to the main cabin bag.
Vistara: The Premium Experience
Vistara, a full-service carrier, also adheres to the 7 kg cabin baggage limit for Economy Class passengers on domestic flights. Premium Economy and Business Class passengers have a more generous allowance. While the weight is standard, always double-check the dimensions with the airline before flying. It's important to note that for flights originating from high-security airports like Jammu and Srinagar, hand baggage rules can be even stricter, sometimes with no hand baggage allowed at all, so checking beforehand is critical.
SpiceJet and Akasa Air: The Challengers
SpiceJet also allows one piece of cabin baggage weighing up to 7 kg. However, their size restrictions can vary depending on the aircraft. For Boeing flights, the dimensions are 55 cm x 35 cm x 25 cm, while for the smaller Q400 aircraft, it's 50 cm x 35 cm x 23 cm. Akasa Air, one of the newer players, allows a 7 kg cabin bag plus a 3 kg personal item. Their size rule is based on a total linear dimension of 115 cm (Length + Width + Height), offering a bit more flexibility than a rigid sizer might.
Smart Packing for a Smooth Journey
Beyond knowing the numbers, a few strategies can make your airport experience smoother. First, weigh your bag at home. A simple luggage scale can save you a lot of money and stress. Second, pack heavy items like chargers and books in your personal item, as it is sometimes weighed separately, if at all. Third, wear your heaviest items of clothing, like a jacket or boots, on the plane rather than packing them. Finally, if you know you'll be over the limit, it is almost always cheaper to pre-purchase extra baggage allowance online than to pay the high fees at the airport counter.
