Know Before You Go: Visa Rules for Indians
Good news for Indian passport holders: planning a Thai getaway has become much simpler. As of September 15, 2026, a new rule allows tourists from India and 59 other countries to enter Thailand for up to 30 days without a visa. This replaces the previous
60-day visa exemption scheme. This visa-free entry is specifically for tourism and is perfect for a short island-hopping trip. It eliminates the need for advance visa applications and associated fees, making spontaneous trips easier and more affordable. Just ensure your passport is valid and you have proof of onward travel.
The Perfect Route: Phuket to Krabi
For a 6-day trip, efficiency is key. The classic Andaman coast route covering Phuket, the Phi Phi Islands, and Krabi is a perfect choice. These destinations are well-connected by an efficient and affordable ferry network, minimizing travel time and maximizing your beach time. This route offers a fantastic mix of experiences, from the vibrant energy of Phuket to the breathtaking natural beauty of Phi Phi and the laid-back vibe of Krabi. You get bustling markets, world-famous lagoons, and serene beaches all in one compact journey.
Day 1-2: Arrival in Phuket & Island Buzz
Fly into Phuket International Airport (HKT) and head to your accommodation. For budget travellers, staying in areas like Patong, Karon, or Kata offers access to affordable guesthouses and hotels. Spend your first day acclimatizing. Explore the vibrant Patong Beach, and as evening falls, dive into the local food scene at a night market instead of a pricey restaurant. On day two, explore Phuket's cultural side. Visit the iconic Big Buddha for panoramic views and wander through the colourful streets of Phuket Old Town with its charming Sino-Portuguese architecture. For transport, rent a scooter for a day to explore at your own pace, a much cheaper alternative to taxis.
Day 3: The Legendary Phi Phi Islands
This is a bucket-list day. Take a morning ferry from Phuket to the Phi Phi Islands. You can book a day tour, but for more flexibility, take the public ferry and hire a private long-tail boat with a group of other travellers upon arrival. This is often cheaper and lets you customize your tour. Ask your boatman to take you to Maya Bay (made famous by the movie 'The Beach'), the stunning Pileh Lagoon for a swim in emerald waters, and Monkey Beach. While you can stay overnight, a day trip is sufficient to see the highlights before taking an afternoon ferry to Krabi, your next base.
Day 4-5: Krabi's Limestone Landscapes
Wake up in Ao Nang, the main tourist hub in Krabi. On day four, head to the stunning Railay Beach, accessible only by a short long-tail boat ride. Surrounded by towering limestone cliffs, it's a paradise for beach lovers and rock climbers. The following day, book a 'Four Islands' tour. This popular and budget-friendly speedboat or long-tail boat trip takes you to Tup Island, Chicken Island, and Poda Island, offering fantastic snorkelling and postcard-perfect scenery. For meals, Ao Nang's main street is lined with street food stalls offering delicious pad Thai, fresh fruit shakes, and grilled seafood for a fraction of the cost of beachfront restaurants.
Day 6: Final Exploration and Departure
On your final day, depending on your flight schedule from Krabi International Airport (KBV), you have a couple of options. For a final dose of adventure and a rewarding view, you can tackle the challenging 1,237-step climb to the Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Suea). If you prefer a more relaxed morning, enjoy a final Thai massage, do some last-minute souvenir shopping in Ao Nang, or simply relax on the beach. Enjoy one last affordable and delicious local meal before heading to the airport, filled with memories of an incredible and budget-friendly island adventure.
