The Myth of Pure Flexibility
For years, the gold standard for good movement was flexibility—the ability to achieve a deep stretch. We hold passive stretches, hoping to lengthen tight muscles. But this is only half the story. Flexibility simply describes how far a joint can be moved
passively, like when you use a band or your own hand to pull your leg into a stretch. Mobility, however, is your ability to actively move that joint through its entire range of motion using only your own strength and control. Possessing a large range of motion without the strength to manage it can lead to joint instability and injury. It’s like owning a race car with a huge engine but a faulty steering wheel; you have the potential for great performance, but no control when it matters most.
Usable Range: Where Strength Meets Motion
The goal isn't just to be flexible; it's to have a large usable range of motion. This concept is the foundation of modern mobility training methodologies like Functional Range Conditioning (FRC). The key is to build strength at the very limits of your motion, what’s known as end-range strength. When your nervous system knows you can safely control a position, it grants you access to it. If a joint feels weak or unstable at a certain angle, your brain will instinctively restrict movement to prevent potential harm. By training strength in these end-range positions, you convert passive flexibility into active, functional mobility that serves you in sports and daily life.
How to Build End-Range Control
Building this specific type of strength doesn't require heavy weights. In fact, it often starts with no weight at all. The focus is on slow, deliberate movements and isometric holds. For example, instead of just passively stretching your hamstrings, try this: get into the stretch, and at the deepest point you can control, actively contract your quadriceps (the muscles on the front of your thigh) to try and pull the leg deeper. Then, contract your hamstrings as if trying to press your heel down into an imaginary floor. This teaches your nervous system to be strong and stable in that lengthened position. These isometric contractions build neurological control and tell your body that this range is safe to access and use.
A Daily Habit: Controlled Articular Rotations (CARs)
One of the most effective ways to maintain and improve joint health is by incorporating Controlled Articular Rotations, or CARs, into your daily routine. These are not mindless joint circles; they are slow, active, and focused rotations of a single joint through its greatest pain-free range of motion. Think of it as brushing your teeth, but for your joints. By moving a joint like your shoulder or hip through its full circle with muscular tension, you lubricate the joint capsule, improve neurological control, and get a daily assessment of how well your joints are moving. Performing just a few CARs for your major joints each morning can take only 5-10 minutes and make a significant difference in your long-term joint health and mobility.
