A Major Upgrade Under the Hood
Indian Railways has initiated the phased rollout of a next-generation Passenger Reservation System (PRS), a monumental upgrade to the core infrastructure that has handled train bookings for nearly four decades. Developed by the Centre for Railway Information
Systems (CRIS), this new cloud-based platform is not just a cosmetic facelift; it's a complete overhaul designed to tackle the massive and ever-growing demand for online tickets, which now account for nearly 89% of all reservations. The primary goal is to boost capacity and speed, promising a much more reliable experience for millions of passengers. The transition from the old system is happening gradually to ensure minimal disruption for travellers.
Blazing Fast Speeds and Higher Capacity
The headline feature of the new PRS is its sheer power. The previous system could process around 32,000 ticket bookings per minute, a number often overwhelmed during peak hours like the Tatkal window. The upgraded platform is engineered to handle over 1,50,000 bookings per minute, a nearly five-fold increase. Similarly, the capacity for passenger enquiries—such as checking PNR status or seat availability—is set to jump from four lakh to over 40 lakh per minute. This massive boost in backend power aims to make the dreaded system crashes and slowdowns during high-traffic periods a thing of the past, offering a more stable and responsive booking environment for everyone.
The New IRCTC Beta Website Experience
While the core PRS is being upgraded, passengers will experience the changes through a redesigned IRCTC beta website, which went live in July 2026. The new interface is cleaner, more modern, and designed to be more intuitive. When logging in for the first time, users are required to complete a one-time verification of their mobile number and email address by entering OTPs sent to them. This mandatory step is aimed at enhancing account security. Once verified, the booking process feels more streamlined, with a simplified layout and easier navigation for tasks like searching for trains, managing your profile, or checking Aadhaar authentication status.
Smarter Features for Travellers
Beyond speed, the new ecosystem introduces several user-centric features. One of the most significant is the AI-powered waitlist prediction tool. This feature, which has reportedly improved its accuracy to 94%, gives passengers a much more reliable estimate of their chances of getting a confirmed seat, helping them make better travel decisions. The new website interface also presents information more clearly, for example, showing the number of available trains on different days of the week at a glance. These enhancements, combined with a multilingual interface, are designed to make the entire process from planning to booking more convenient.
A Less Stressful Tatkal Window
The high-stakes Tatkal booking window has always been the ultimate stress test for IRCTC's platform. The new upgrade directly addresses this pain point. With its massively increased transaction capacity, the system is better equipped to handle the simultaneous rush of thousands of users. Early data from the beta website rollout has been promising. According to IRCTC, the number of Tatkal bookings successfully completed within the first three minutes has increased by over 5%. While it may not eliminate the race entirely, this improvement suggests a significant reduction in transaction failures and a higher chance for genuine passengers to secure an emergency ticket.
