A New Daily Connection
The centerpiece of the new services is a daily express train connecting Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai with Sawantwadi Road in the southern Konkan region. This service was launched to address the persistent demand for better, more
direct connectivity on one of Maharashtra's busiest railway corridors. The inaugural special, Train No. 01001, was flagged off on September 3, 2026, marking a significant step in strengthening the rail link between the state capital and key destinations in the districts of Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg. The regular service is expected to operate as Train No. 15087 from CSMT to Sawantwadi Road and Train No. 15088 for the return journey.
Route, Stoppages, and Timings
Covering a distance of approximately 510 kilometers, the new daily express will feature 22 stops, ensuring comprehensive connectivity across the Konkan coast. Key halts include major stations like Dadar, Thane, and Panvel, before proceeding to Roha, Mangaon, Khed, Chiplun, Ratnagiri, Kankavli, and Kudal, finally terminating at Sawantwadi Road. According to railway officials, the schedule is designed for passenger convenience. The train from CSMT is slated for an overnight departure at 11:55 PM, reaching Sawantwadi Road the following afternoon at 2:15 PM. The return train will depart Sawantwadi Road at 5:20 PM and arrive at CSMT early the next morning at 6:40 AM, allowing for a comfortable overnight journey back to Mumbai.
Boosting Tourism and Easing Overcrowding
This new service is anticipated to provide a major boost to tourism in the Konkan region, which is famous for its picturesque beaches, historic forts, and lush landscapes. It will improve access to popular destinations such as Tarkarli, Amboli, and the tourism circuit along the Goa border. Furthermore, the daily train is expected to alleviate pressure on other Konkan-bound trains that originate from Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) and Dadar, which are often heavily booked, especially during peak seasons. The train itself is composed of modern LHB coaches, with a mix of First Class AC, AC 2-Tier, AC 3-Tier, Sleeper, and General Second Class coaches to cater to different passenger needs.
Additional Services for Festival Rush
Beyond the new daily express, Central Railway has also announced a significant number of special trains to manage the anticipated rush for the Ganpati festival in September 2026. A total of 262 special services have been planned, comprising 200 reserved and 62 unreserved trains. These trains will connect Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur with various destinations in the Konkan, with Sawantwadi Road and Ratnagiri being major beneficiaries of these additional services. For instance, a daily special between Mumbai CSMT and Ratnagiri (01153/01154) and other weekly services have been scheduled throughout September to ensure that the lakhs of devotees travelling to their hometowns for the festival have more options. This proactive measure highlights the immense demand on this route, with a high number of bookings already confirmed on these special services.
