We trust packaging to keep our food fresh and safe from contamination. Yet, the very materials designed to protect our food can sometimes be a source of concern. Certain chemicals used to make packaging strong, flexible, or grease-resistant can slowly
transfer, or 'leach', into the food we eat. This process, known as chemical migration, can be accelerated by factors like heat (such as microwaving), prolonged storage, and the type of food, with fatty or acidic foods being more susceptible. While the amount of transfer from a single package might be tiny, repeated exposure over many years can lead to an accumulation of these substances in our bodies, which researchers have linked to a range of health issues.
Decoding the Chemical Alphabet: BPA, Phthalates, and PFAS
Three groups of chemicals are of particular concern in food packaging: Bisphenol A (BPA), phthalates, and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). These compounds are known as endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), meaning they can interfere with the body's hormonal systems. This disruption is linked to a variety of health problems, including reproductive issues, developmental delays in children, and an increased risk for certain types of cancer and metabolic disorders. Understanding where these chemicals are commonly found is the first step toward reducing your family's exposure.
Bisphenol A (BPA): The Hard Plastic Problem
BPA is a chemical used to make hard, clear polycarbonate plastics and the epoxy resins that line the inside of many food and beverage cans to prevent corrosion. Because it's an endocrine disruptor that mimics estrogen, it has been linked to hormonal imbalances, reproductive problems, and other health concerns. In response to consumer demand, many products are now labelled "BPA-free." However, some studies suggest that the substitute chemicals, like Bisphenol S (BPS) or Bisphenol F (BPF), may have similar hormonal effects, meaning a "BPA-free" label isn't a guaranteed mark of safety. This has led to a push for greater transparency and the use of genuinely safer materials.
PFAS: The 'Forever Chemicals' in Your Takeaway
Often called "forever chemicals" because they break down very slowly in the environment and in our bodies, PFAS are a large family of chemicals used to make surfaces resistant to grease, water, and stains. They are commonly found in fast-food wrappers, pizza boxes, microwave popcorn bags, and some non-stick cookware. Research has connected PFAS accumulation in the body to a range of serious health conditions, including immune system dysfunction, liver damage, and an increased risk of some cancers. Regulatory bodies in India and globally are increasingly scrutinizing and restricting the use of these persistent chemicals in food contact materials.
A Practical Guide to Safer Choices
While the issue can seem daunting, there are several simple, effective steps you can take to minimise your exposure to these chemicals. Start by choosing food storage containers made of glass, stainless steel, or ceramic whenever possible. Avoid microwaving food in any plastic container; transfer it to a glass or ceramic dish first. When buying packaged goods, opt for items in glass jars instead of cans. Try to reduce your reliance on single-use plastics and takeaway containers by using your own reusable containers for leftovers or when buying food from delis. Eating more fresh, whole foods that don't require much packaging is another excellent strategy. These small adjustments can collectively make a significant difference.
