Understanding the Monsoon 'Break'
Just when we get used to the daily rhythm of rains, the skies can clear up, and the days can turn hot and dry for a week or more. This is what meteorologists call a monsoon 'break' or 'pause'. It’s a temporary dry spell that occurs even during the peak
season. For several days now, rainfall activity has been noticeably subdued, particularly across peninsular and central India, leading to warmer temperatures and concerns about the remainder of the season. However, a break is not a withdrawal; it's a characteristic lull in the monsoon's otherwise energetic performance. These pauses are a normal, if sometimes frustrating, part of the season's cycle.
The Science Behind the Dry Spell
The primary reason for a monsoon break is the movement of the monsoon trough. Think of this trough as a vast, elongated low-pressure zone that stretches from northwest India to the Bay of Bengal, acting as the main highway for rain-bearing systems. When this trough is in its normal position over the plains, it pulls moisture from the sea, delivering widespread rain to central and northern India. During a break, this trough shifts northwards and hugs the foothills of the Himalayas. This shift dramatically changes the weather pattern: the plains become dry, while heavy rainfall gets concentrated in the northeastern states and along the Himalayan belt, sometimes causing floods there.
A Ray of Hope from the Bay of Bengal
Just as the dry spell began to feel prolonged, forecasters have identified a new weather system that could turn things around. An upper-air cyclonic circulation is forming over the Bay of Bengal. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts that this circulation will likely develop into a low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal around September 11. These low-pressure systems are the engines of the monsoon. They act like magnets, drawing moisture-laden winds from the sea towards the land and re-energising the entire monsoon system. The formation of this new system is the most promising sign that the current break is about to end.
How This System Can Revive the Rains
The developing low-pressure area is crucial because it can pull the monsoon trough southwards, away from the Himalayan foothills and back towards the Indian plains. As this system moves inland, typically in a west-northwest direction, it will drag the axis of the monsoon with it. This reactivates the flow of moist winds across large parts of the country that have been dry. The result is expected to be a fresh spell of fairly widespread rainfall, effectively ending the monsoon pause. This revival is critical, as September rainfall plays a key role in the country's agriculture and water reservoir levels for the post-monsoon months.
Who Gets Rain and When
The influence of the new system is expected to be felt first in eastern India before spreading to central and other regions. The IMD has forecast that this system will likely cause enhanced rainfall over eastern and adjoining parts of peninsular India. States like West Bengal, Odisha, and Jharkhand can expect a significant increase in rainfall. As the system tracks inland, it is expected to bring widespread showers across central India as well. While Peninsular India has seen subdued rainfall for about a week, this system is expected to bring a gentle revival there too. This could be one of the last major pushes of the monsoon for 2026 before the withdrawal process typically begins from the northwest.
