Vodafone Idea (Vi) and the state-owned BSNL consistently lag behind in most tested areas, particularly on data performance and coverage consistency. For instance, across routes in Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Gujarat, both Jio and Airtel have demonstrated significantly more reliable service and faster data speeds than their competitors, making them the primary contenders for any frequent traveller.
Reliance Jio: The King of Download Speeds
In the majority of TRAI's recent highway and railway assessments, Reliance Jio consistently takes the crown for the fastest average download speeds. On the Delhi-Jammu highway, Jio's average download speed was a staggering 295.90 Mbps, far ahead of its rivals. Similarly, on the Ahmedabad-Gandhidham rail route, it clocked 134.73 Mbps. Beyond just speed, Jio also frequently performs best on coverage, registering the fewest instances of 'no signal' in tests like the one on Rajasthan's Munabao-Tanot highway. Bharti Airtel: The Reliable and Balanced Performer
While Jio often leads on pure download speed, Bharti Airtel consistently proves to be an exceptionally reliable and balanced network. In many tests, Airtel records the lowest or zero call drops, ensuring voice call stability. Furthermore, it frequently comes out on top for upload speeds, a critical factor for video calls, sending large files, or posting social media updates from the road. For example, on the Munabao-Tanot highway, Airtel led with an average upload throughput of 14.03 Mbps. Its download speeds are also highly competitive, often placing a strong second to Jio, as seen on the Chandigarh-Palampur corridor where it delivered a robust 145.87 Mbps. This makes Airtel a strong all-rounder, ideal for users who need a dependable mix of call quality and solid data performance.
Vi and BSNL: The Situation on the Ground
The data from TRAI's tests shows both Vodafone Idea (Vi) and BSNL facing significant challenges in keeping pace with the two leaders on travel routes. On the Delhi-Jammu highway, Vi's average download speed was recorded at 25.34 Mbps, a fraction of what Jio and Airtel offered. BSNL's performance is often weaker still. On the Jodhpur-Ahmedabad rail line, TRAI's report highlighted that BSNL had the highest rate of poor signal strength and a call drop rate of over 12%. Similarly, on the Munabao-Tanot highway, both Vi and BSNL's data speeds were found to be largely unusable for modern applications. While they may offer competitive service in certain static urban locations, for travel corridors, the data suggests a significant performance gap.

While Jio generally leads in speed and Airtel in upload reliability, the best operator for you depends entirely on the roads and railway lines you travel most.
