A High-Stakes Repair in Orbit
On Tuesday, August 25, NASA astronaut Anil Menon and European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Sophie Adenot floated out of the Quest airlock to begin their mission. Their task was to replace a faulty Space-to-Ground Antenna (SGANT), a piece of hardware essential
for high-speed communication between the station and Mission Control in Houston. This spacewalk, officially designated U.S. EVA 98, was the culmination of a two-part effort. During a previous spacewalk on August 18, the pair successfully removed the failed unit but ran out of time to install its replacement due to stubborn bolts and electrical cables that took longer than expected to disconnect. This second outing was dedicated to finishing the job.
The Astronauts and the Machine
For Menon, clad in a suit with red stripes, this was his third career spacewalk. Adenot, in an unmarked suit, was on her second, having already made history on their prior outing as the first woman from France to perform a spacewalk. The mission required a blend of human dexterity and robotic precision. While Adenot traversed the station's exterior using handrails, Menon was attached to the end of the 17-metre-long Canadarm2 robotic arm. From inside the station, NASA astronaut Jack Hathaway controlled the arm, carefully guiding Menon and the new antenna into position on the Z1 truss segment.
The Crucial Connection
The antenna is far more than just a simple receiver; it's a vital component of the station's ability to send and receive large amounts of data, including high-definition video and scientific telemetry, via NASA's satellite network. Ground controllers confirmed the importance of the task, with one telling the crew, "You just saved the video dish." With an increasing number of complex experiments and crew members aboard the orbiting laboratory, maintaining robust, high-speed communication links is more critical than ever. The successful installation ensures that the flow of information between the astronauts and Earth remains uninterrupted.
A Job Well Done
After six hours and 30 minutes of meticulous work, the new antenna was installed and connected. Initial checkouts from flight controllers on the ground showed good power and data transmission, confirming the mission's success. With the primary task complete, the astronauts also moved the failed antenna they had previously removed to a more permanent storage platform on the station's truss. The spacewalk, the 283rd in support of station assembly and maintenance, concluded at 2:57 p.m. EDT when the astronauts returned to the airlock. Menon has now accumulated 19 hours and 20 minutes of total spacewalking time, while Adenot's total stands at 12 hours and 53 minutes.
