Understanding the Annual Onam Rush
Every year, the weeks leading up to Onam see a massive surge in travel towards Kerala. Keralites living and working in other states, from major cities like Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Delhi, all try to make their way home to celebrate with their families.
This results in an overwhelming demand for train tickets, with regular services getting booked out months in advance. A search for tickets on popular routes during the Onam season, which falls in late August 2026, already shows extensive waitlists. This predictable yet intense demand makes the announcement of Onam special trains a highly anticipated event, as they provide much-needed additional capacity.
Indian Railways' Plan for Onam 2026
Recognizing the immense pressure on the network, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced that over 100 special train services will be operated to handle the Onam rush this year. These services are designed to connect major cities across India with various destinations in Kerala, offering a lifeline to travelers struggling to find confirmed tickets. While the full schedule is being rolled out in phases, the Southern Railway has already started notifying specific trains, bringing relief to passengers.
Key Special Trains Announced So Far
As of early July, Southern Railway has announced several key weekly special trains. One major route is between Mangaluru Central and Chennai Egmore. Train No. 06126 will run from Mangaluru Central to Chennai Egmore on Mondays from July 13 to August 31, while Train No. 06125 will operate in the return direction on Tuesdays from July 14 to September 1. Another pair of special trains connects Thiruvananthapuram Central and Tambaram. Train No. 06110 will run from Thiruvananthapuram to Tambaram, and No. 06109 will operate from Tambaram back to Thiruvananthapuram, with four services each way scheduled for August and September. A weekly special has also been announced between Chennai Central and Kollam (No. 06119/06120) for August and early September. Passengers are advised to monitor official railway announcements as more trains connecting cities like Bengaluru and Mumbai are expected soon.
How and When to Book Your Tickets
Booking for these special trains is a time-sensitive affair. For instance, advance reservations for the Thiruvananthapuram-Tambaram specials began at 8 a.m. on July 9, 2026. Tickets for special trains are made available through the IRCTC website, the 'IRCTC Rail Connect' mobile app, and at Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters. Given the high demand, tickets for these services, especially in AC and sleeper classes, can be sold out within hours, if not minutes, of the booking window opening. It is crucial for travelers to know the exact date and time when reservations for their desired train will commence and be prepared to book instantly.
Essential Tips for Successful Booking
To increase your chances of securing a confirmed ticket, a little preparation goes a long way. Before the booking opens, ensure you have a stable, high-speed internet connection. Use the IRCTC app or website and log in a few minutes before the booking start time. Keep a list of all passenger details—names, ages, and ID card numbers—ready to copy and paste. Pre-filling the passenger list in your IRCTC account can save precious seconds. Also, have your payment details handy, whether it's UPI, credit/debit card, or a digital wallet, to complete the transaction quickly. If your initial attempt fails, don't give up immediately. Check for availability on different dates or in different classes. Being flexible with your travel dates by a day or two can sometimes make all the difference.
