The Monsoon Humidity Challenge
Working out during the monsoon, even indoors, presents a unique challenge. High humidity means the air is already saturated with moisture. This makes it harder for your sweat to evaporate, which is your body's primary way of cooling down. As a result,
your body works harder, your heart rate increases, and you might feel fatigued more quickly. You keep sweating in an attempt to cool off, but the sweat just drips, leading to significant fluid and electrolyte loss without the same cooling benefit. This is why you might feel more drained after a gym session in July than you did in May, even if the temperature is lower.
Why Sodium is Not the Enemy
Sodium often gets a bad rap, but it is a crucial electrolyte, especially for active individuals. It plays a vital role in maintaining fluid balance, nerve function, and muscle contractions. When you exercise and sweat, you lose sodium along with water. If you replace all that lost fluid with plain water, you risk diluting the sodium concentration in your blood. This can lead to a dangerous condition known as exercise-associated hyponatremia.
Recognising a Sodium Imbalance
Exercise-associated hyponatremia, or a severe drop in blood sodium levels, can be serious. Initially, the symptoms are often mild and can be mistaken for dehydration or overexertion. These include nausea, fatigue, headache, dizziness, and muscle weakness or cramps. However, if the imbalance worsens, it can lead to more severe symptoms like vomiting, confusion, seizures, and in extreme cases, can be fatal. The irony is that it's often caused by trying to be healthy and hydrating aggressively, but without replacing lost electrolytes.
Your Pre-Workout Hydration Plan
Proper hydration doesn't start when you feel thirsty. Begin your workout well-hydrated by drinking about 500-600 ml of water around two to three hours before you hit the gym. This gives your body time to absorb the fluid and excrete any excess. If you're heading for an early morning session, even a glass of water before you leave home can make a difference. The goal is to start your workout with your fluid and electrolyte levels already balanced.
Hydrating During Your Workout
The golden rule during your workout is not to overdo it with plain water, especially during long or intense sessions. A practical guideline is to drink small amounts, about 150-300 ml, every 15 to 20 minutes. For workouts lasting less than an hour, water is generally sufficient. However, for sessions longer than 60-90 minutes, or if you are a particularly heavy sweater, it's wise to switch to a sports drink or add an electrolyte tablet to your water. This helps replace the sodium and other minerals you're losing through sweat, maintaining that crucial balance. Listening to your thirst is also a good guide, as it prevents you from drinking more than you need.
Post-Workout Recovery and Replenishment
Your hydration efforts shouldn't end with your last rep. After your workout, you need to replenish the fluids and electrolytes lost. A simple way to gauge fluid loss is to weigh yourself before and after a workout, though this is not necessary for most casual gym-goers. Focus on rehydrating steadily over the next few hours. Consuming a meal that contains some sodium after your workout will help your body retain the fluid you drink and restore balance naturally. Salty snacks in moderation or electrolyte-rich foods like bananas can also aid recovery.
