Every November, Shillong trades its lush greens for brilliant shades of pink. The Himalayan cherry blossoms are in full bloom, transforming the city into a floral wonderland and signalling the perfect time for a memorable getaway.
An Autumn Bloom Unlike Any Other
While many associate
cherry blossoms with spring in Japan, Meghalaya's capital offers a unique autumnal spectacle. The wild Himalayan cherry, or Prunus cerasoides, bursts into colour from late October to mid-November, creating a breathtaking landscape against the crisp, cool air of the Khasi Hills. This natural event has become a major draw for travellers seeking a different kind of floral pilgrimage. The weather in November is typically dry and pleasant, with clear skies perfect for outdoor exploration, making it one of the best times to visit Shillong. The days are comfortable for sightseeing, though evenings can get chilly, so packing layers is advisable.
Finding the Best Blossom Trails
You don't need a special ticket to witness this beauty; the blossoms are scattered across the city, free for all to enjoy. Some of the most iconic and photo-worthy spots are considered local 'trails' for blossom chasers. Ward's Lake, in the heart of the city, is a top recommendation, where the pink flowers create stunning reflections on the water during a leisurely walk or boat ride. Other prime locations include the expansive Shillong Golf Course, the area around the Polo Grounds, and the serene Lady Hydari Park. For those willing to venture a bit further, the roads leading to Upper Shillong and Mawphlang offer beautiful roadside clusters of cherry trees, adding a splash of pink to your drive.
The Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival 2026
Coinciding with the peak bloom is the annual Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival, a vibrant celebration of music, culture, and nature. In 2026, the festival is scheduled for November 20th and 21st. It has grown into a major event, attracting both Indian and international artists. The 2026 lineup features performers like Khalid, Swae Lee, and Boys Like Girls. The festival has moved to a new permanent venue at the New Shillong Highland Grounds to accommodate its growing scale. Beyond the music, attendees can explore stalls featuring local cuisine, handicrafts, and art, making it a comprehensive cultural experience.
Planning Your November Trip
Given that November is a peak tourist season in Shillong, booking accommodation and transport well in advance is highly recommended. The most common way to reach Shillong is by flying into Guwahati's Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (GAU), which is wellconnected to major Indian cities, and then taking a scenic 3–4 hour cab ride. Shillong's own Umroi Airport (SHL) has limited connectivity. Within the city, local taxis are the primary mode of transport. For photography enthusiasts, the best light for capturing the blossoms is during the 'golden hours' of the early morning and late afternoon, just before sunset, which happens early around 4:30 PM in November.
Beyond the Blossoms
While the cherry blossoms are the star attraction, your November itinerary can include much more. The clear weather is ideal for a day trip to the Laitlum Canyons for breathtaking panoramic views or to the famous three–tiered Elephant Falls. Boating on the vast Umiam Lake is another popular activity. For a dose of culture, the Don Bosco Centre for Indigenous Cultures offers a deep dive into the heritage of Northeast India. You can also explore the Mawphlang Sacred Forest, a dense, ancient grove preserved by traditional beliefs, which offers a serene natural experience.
