What is Food Safety Connect?
Food Safety Connect is a digital initiative by FSSAI designed to bridge the gap between consumers and food safety regulators. It's available as both a mobile app for Android and iOS and a web portal. This platform serves two primary functions: it allows
you to verify the authenticity of any food business's FSSAI licence and provides a streamlined system for lodging complaints against food safety violations. The goal is to create a more responsive and transparent food ecosystem where every citizen can act as a watchdog, ensuring that the food you eat is safe and meets national standards.
How to Verify a Food Business Licence
Every food business operator (FBO), from the smallest street vendor to the largest manufacturer, is required to display their 14-digit FSSAI licence or registration number at their premises. Verifying this number is simple. Using the Food Safety Connect app or the FoSCoS (Food Safety Compliance System) web portal, you can access a tool called 'FBO Search'. By entering the 14-digit number, you can instantly see crucial details about the business, including its registered name, address, licence validity, and the kinds of food products it is permitted to handle. Some establishments now also display a QR code that you can scan for instant verification. This simple check helps you make informed choices, ensuring you're buying from a legally compliant and monitored business.
Filing a Complaint: A Step-by-Step Guide
If you encounter an issue like adulterated food, poor hygiene, a misleading label, or an expired product, you can report it directly. First, download the 'Food Safety Connect' app or visit the consumer grievance portal. After logging in, select the option to lodge a new complaint. You'll need to provide details about the food business, such as its name and address. The app allows you to choose the specific type of violation from a list. To strengthen your case, you can upload evidence like photos of the product, the bill, or the unhygienic conditions. Once submitted, the system generates a unique tracking ID, allowing you to monitor the complaint's progress.
What Happens After You Report an Issue?
Once a complaint is submitted through the portal, it is automatically forwarded to the relevant food safety authority for that jurisdiction. The initial complaint is often sent to the food business itself for a direct resolution, with a copy marked to the State Food Safety Commissioner. If the response is unsatisfactory or no action is taken within a set period, the complaint can be escalated to state-level authorities for further investigation. This process may involve inspections, sample collection for lab testing, and other enforcement actions. While FSSAI aims for timely resolution, you can use your tracking ID to check the status online at any time. This system ensures that your concern is formally recorded and addressed.
The Bigger Picture: A Culture of Accountability
The Food Safety Connect platform is more than just a complaint box; it's a move towards creating a culture of shared responsibility for food safety. By encouraging consumers to be the "eyes" of the regulator, FSSAI is leveraging public participation to enhance its surveillance capabilities. This increased scrutiny puts pressure on businesses to maintain higher standards, knowing that any customer can easily verify their credentials and report violations. Recent enforcement actions against major companies for issues like contaminated products and misleading ads show that these consumer complaints are leading to tangible action. Ultimately, the widespread use of this tool can lead to a safer food market for everyone, where transparency and accountability are not just expected but systematically enforced.
