What Are 'Green Crackers'?
Green crackers are a category of fireworks developed by India's Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and its National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI). Their creation was prompted by Supreme Court directives to find
a less-polluting alternative to traditional fireworks. Unlike conventional crackers, which contain highly polluting chemicals like barium nitrate, arsenic, and lead, green crackers use modified chemical formulations. The primary goal is to reduce harmful emissions and noise. According to CSIR-NEERI, these crackers cut particulate matter emissions by at least 30-40% compared to their traditional counterparts. They are not, however, completely pollution-free or silent.
The Three Main Types to Know
CSIR-NEERI has developed three main families of green crackers, each with a specific emission-reducing technology. The first is SWAS (Safe Water Releaser), which releases water vapour as it bursts. This water vapour acts as a dust suppressant, helping to settle particulate matter. The second is STAR (Safe Thermite Cracker), which does not contain potassium nitrate or sulphur, leading to reduced particulate matter and lower sound intensity. The third type is SAFAL (Safe Minimal Aluminium), which, as the name suggests, uses a minimal amount of aluminium and substitutes it with magnesium, reducing emissions.
How to Identify Genuine Green Crackers
Ensuring you buy authentic green crackers is crucial to making a positive environmental impact. Fake or mislabelled products are a known problem. Every box of genuine green crackers must feature two key identifiers. First, look for the official green CSIR-NEERI logo printed on the box. Second, each package must have a scannable QR code. When you scan this code with your smartphone, it should lead to a page that authenticates the product and provides manufacturing details. A code that doesn't work or leads to an unrelated page is a major red flag. Always buy from licensed sellers and avoid unbranded boxes or loose crackers.
The Real Difference: Are They Truly Safe?
While significantly better than traditional options, it's important to have realistic expectations. The 'green' label signifies 'less polluting', not 'zero pollution'. Even green crackers release pollutants and contribute to air quality degradation, especially when used in large numbers in areas with poor ventilation. Similarly, while they are designed to produce less sound—typically below 125 decibels compared to the 160+ decibels of some conventional crackers—they are not silent and can still cause noise pollution. The same safety precautions apply: use them in open spaces, maintain a safe distance, and never let children handle them without supervision.
Navigating the Rules and Regulations
The sale and use of firecrackers in India are governed by a framework of rules, which can vary by state and city. The Supreme Court has consistently favoured the use of certified green crackers over a complete ban, but has also instituted time restrictions for bursting them. Typically, a window from 8 PM to 10 PM on Diwali night is permitted, though you should always check the specific rules issued by your local authorities for 2026. The online sale of crackers is restricted, and purchases should only be made from licensed vendors. Violating these rules can lead to fines and penalties.
