The Route: Connecting Jammu to the Valley
The Vande Bharat Express provides a direct, all-weather link between Jammu Tawi and Srinagar. This service, which became fully operational from Jammu on April 30, 2026, has dramatically cut travel time. What was once a punishing road journey of over eight
hours can now be completed in approximately 4 hours and 50 minutes. The train covers a distance of 269 kilometers, navigating one of the most challenging and beautiful railway alignments in the world. Key stops along this route include Martyr Captain Tushar Mahajan Udhampur, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, Reasi, and Banihal, before the train reaches its final destination in Srinagar. Due to high demand, Indian Railways now operates multiple services on this route, with a third Vande Bharat Express recently approved to increase capacity.
An Engineering Marvel Through the Himalayas
The journey is as much about the destination as it is about the incredible feat of engineering that makes it possible. The Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) is one of India's most ambitious infrastructure projects. Passengers will travel across 943 bridges and through 36 tunnels, including the country's longest transportation tunnel, the T-50, which stretches over 12.7 kilometers. The undisputed highlight is the Chenab Rail Bridge, the world's highest railway arch bridge. Standing 359 meters above the riverbed, it is 35 meters taller than the Eiffel Tower and a breathtaking sight. The route also features the Anji Khad Bridge, India's first cable-stayed railway bridge. These structures are designed to withstand extreme weather and seismic activity, ensuring a safe and reliable connection to the valley.
The Onboard Vande Bharat Experience
Specially designed for the region, the Vande Bharat trains are equipped for comfort in all seasons. They feature advanced heating systems to handle temperatures as low as minus 20 degrees Celsius, ensuring year-round operation. Passengers can choose between AC Chair Car (CC) and Executive Chair Car (EC), which offers wider, rotatable seats. The train is known for its smooth, jerk-free ride, large panoramic windows for enjoying the stunning scenery, onboard Wi-Fi, and an infotainment system. Catering is also available, with options for a Kashmiri spread. The coaches are climate-controlled, providing a comfortable environment regardless of the weather outside.
Scenic Highlights and Travel Tips
The journey offers a visual feast of ever-changing landscapes. From the plains of Jammu, the train ascends into the mighty Pir Panjal range, offering views of deep gorges, lush meadows, snow-capped peaks, and apple orchards. For the best views of the Chenab Bridge, a window seat on the right side of the train when traveling from Jammu to Srinagar is recommended. After Banihal, the left side offers better vistas of the Pir Panjal. It's advisable to carry a valid government-issued photo ID, as it is checked during the journey. Given the significant temperature changes between Jammu and the higher altitudes, dressing in layers is a practical choice. Mobile signals can be inconsistent, especially inside the long tunnels, so downloading entertainment beforehand is a good idea.
How to Book Your Tickets
