This drop in temperature is a crucial signal to your brain that it's time to wind down and initiate sleep. The process involves vasodilation, where blood vessels in your hands and feet expand to release heat, effectively lowering your core temperature by a degree or two. This isn’t just a side effect of getting tired; it's one of the primary biological triggers for sleep itself.
How Humidity Sabotages Your Sleep
The human body’s most effective tool for cooling down is sweating. As perspiration evaporates from your skin, it takes heat with it. This is where high humidity, especially the kind we experience during the Indian monsoon, throws a spanner in the works. When the air is already saturated with water vapour—as it is when humidity levels are high—your sweat cannot evaporate efficiently. Instead, it clings to your skin, leaving you feeling sticky and warm. This prevents your body from lowering its core temperature, directly interfering with that critical sleep-onset signal. Studies show that high humidity can increase wakefulness and reduce the time spent in the most restorative stages of sleep: deep sleep and REM sleep. These stages are vital for physical recovery, memory consolidation, and overall health.
The Monsoon's Unique Challenge
The monsoon doesn't just bring rain; it brings a consistent blanket of damp, heavy air that can linger for days. While many find the sound of rain soothing, the physical environment it creates is often less than ideal for sleep. Ideal indoor humidity for sleeping is generally recommended to be between 40% and 60%. During the monsoon, outdoor humidity often soars well above this, and without proper ventilation, indoor levels follow suit. Humidity above 60% not only hampers body cooling but also creates a perfect breeding ground for allergens like mould and dust mites, which can further disrupt sleep by causing respiratory issues or allergies.
Creating a Better Sleep Environment
While you can’t change the weather, you can control your bedroom's microclimate. If you have an air conditioner, use its 'dry' or dehumidify mode to pull excess moisture from the air without over-cooling the room. A standalone dehumidifier is also an excellent investment for the monsoon months. Increasing air circulation is key; use ceiling fans or pedestal fans to create a breeze, which helps sweat evaporate even in humid conditions. Ensure your room is well-ventilated during the day by opening windows when it isn't raining to prevent dampness from setting in. Finally, check your home for any leaks or damp spots that could be contributing to indoor humidity.
Adjusting Your Habits for Cooler Sleep
Your personal habits can also make a big difference. Opt for lightweight, breathable sleepwear made from natural fabrics like cotton or linen. The same goes for your bedding; moisture-wicking sheets can help draw sweat away from your body. Taking a lukewarm shower before bed can be surprisingly effective. While a cold shower might feel good initially, it can cause your body to conserve heat. A lukewarm shower, however, helps raise your surface temperature slightly, encouraging your body to cool down afterward, which aids the natural temperature drop needed for sleep. Avoid heavy meals and exercise too close to bedtime, as both can raise your core body temperature and make it harder to fall asleep.
