The Modern Traveller's Payment Toolkit
Gone are the days of relying solely on traveller's perchèques or wads of foreign currency. For Indian travellers in 2026, the payment landscape is diverse. The main contenders are credit cards, forex cards, international debit cards, and the rapidly expanding
UPI network. Credit cards offer global acceptance and reward points. Forex cards are prepaid cards that lock in currency exchange rates, offering protection from market fluctuations. Your regular debit card can also be used abroad, but often comes with higher fees. Meanwhile, UPI is now available for QR code-based payments in select countries like the UAE, France, and Singapore, offering a touch of home-grown convenience. The key is not to rely on a single method but to carry a mix for different situations.
Convenience: The Path of Least Resistance
When you're trying to catch a train or pay for a quick meal, convenience is king. Credit cards (Visa and Mastercard) are the most widely accepted payment method globally, making them a default choice for hotels, car rentals, and larger purchases. Contactless tap-to-pay features further speed up small transactions. For domestic trips and increasingly in certain international destinations, UPI is unmatched for quick, mobile-based payments. However, don't discount cash entirely. Many smaller vendors, local markets, and services in destinations like Japan and parts of Europe still operate on a cash-first basis. The most convenient approach is to use credit cards for big-ticket items and keep a modest amount of local currency for everything else.
Rewards: Making Your Spends Work for You
Holiday spending can be substantial, so why not get something back? This is where credit cards shine. Travel-focused credit cards offer a suite of benefits, including air miles, reward points redeemable for flights and hotels, and cashback on your spending. Premium cards often come with valuable perks like complimentary airport lounge access, travel insurance, and concierge services. However, to truly benefit, you must avoid the pitfalls. High interest charges on an unpaid balance can quickly nullify any rewards earned. Also, be mindful of the foreign transaction fee, a charge of 1-3.5% that many banks levy on international usage. Look for cards with low or zero foreign transaction fees to maximize your savings.
Security: Your Top Priority on the Go
A financial mishap can ruin a well-planned vacation. Protecting your money requires a proactive mindset. Before you leave, inform your bank and credit card companies of your travel dates and destinations to prevent them from flagging legitimate transactions as suspicious and freezing your account. Diversify where you keep your payment methods; don't store all your cards and cash in one wallet. Use the hotel safe to store backup cards and extra cash. When transacting, be vigilant. Use ATMs in secure, well-lit locations like inside a bank branch. For online bookings or checking your bank balance, avoid using public Wi-Fi networks which can be vulnerable to hackers. A secure VPN or your mobile data is a much safer option. Many banking apps now also allow you to temporarily freeze or unfreeze your card, giving you instant control if you misplace it.
The Smart Strategy: A Hybrid Approach
The ultimate solution is not to choose one method over the other, but to build a balanced payment strategy. For international trips, a combination of a low-forex-markup credit card and a multi-currency forex card is a powerful duo. Use the credit card for its rewards and purchase protection on major expenses. Use the forex card for ATM withdrawals and daily spending, as it often has lower withdrawal fees and protects you from fluctuating exchange rates. Supplement this with a small amount of local cash for tips and small purchases, and have your UPI app ready in supported countries. Always carry at least one backup card and store it separately from your primary wallet. This layered approach ensures you have the right tool for every situation, balancing convenience, rewards, and security seamlessly.
