Why Clouds Don't Always Mean Cool
On a hot, dry day, your body has an efficient natural air conditioner: sweat. As perspiration evaporates from your skin, it carries heat away, helping you cool down. But when the air is already saturated with water vapour, as it is on a humid or rainy
day, this evaporation process slows down dramatically. Sweat beads on your skin but provides little to no cooling effect. This traps heat in your body, forcing it to work harder to maintain a safe core temperature. This extra strain can happen even when the thermometer shows a moderate temperature, making cloudy, muggy days deceptively dangerous. In these conditions, your body can overheat just as easily, if not more so, than on a sunny day.
The Humidity Trap
This is why meteorologists and health experts often refer to the 'heat index' or 'apparent temperature'. This measurement combines air temperature with relative humidity to give a more accurate picture of what the weather actually feels like to the human body. For example, a temperature of 32°C with 70% humidity can feel like a scorching 41°C. Your body is responding to that higher perceived temperature, putting your heart and other systems under significant stress. High humidity forces your heart to pump harder to circulate blood and try to cool you down, which can increase heart rate and blood pressure, posing a risk especially to vulnerable individuals. It makes physical activity feel much more taxing and can lead to exhaustion much faster.
Recognising Your Risk
While anyone can suffer from heat-related illness in humid conditions, some groups are more susceptible. This includes outdoor workers—such as construction labourers, farmers, and delivery personnel—who may not have the option to reduce their activity. Athletes training outdoors should also be cautious. The elderly, young children, and pregnant women are particularly at risk because their bodies are less efficient at regulating temperature. Additionally, individuals with chronic health conditions, especially heart disease or hypertension, need to be extra careful, as the strain on the cardiovascular system is significantly higher in humid weather. Even everyday activities like a long commute on public transport or gardening can become risky.
Know the Warning Signs
Recognising the early symptoms of heat-related illness is crucial for preventing a medical emergency. The first stage is often heat cramps, which involve painful muscle spasms, usually in the legs and abdomen, accompanied by heavy sweating. If ignored, this can progress to heat exhaustion. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, weakness, cool and clammy skin, a fast but weak pulse, nausea, dizziness, and a headache. The most severe condition is heat stroke, which is a life-threatening emergency. Signs include a high body temperature (above 103°F), hot and red skin (which may be dry or damp), a rapid, strong pulse, and confusion or loss of consciousness. If you suspect someone has heat stroke, call for emergency medical help immediately.
Simple Steps for Staying Safe
The good news is that preventing these conditions is straightforward with a few precautions. First and foremost, stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don't feel thirsty. Electrolyte-rich drinks can also be beneficial, but avoid sugary or caffeinated beverages. Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, and light-coloured clothing made from breathable fabrics like cotton to help sweat evaporate. Plan strenuous activities for the cooler parts of the day, like early morning or late evening. Most importantly, listen to your body. Take frequent breaks in the shade or a cooler, well-ventilated space. If you're working outdoors, employers should schedule regular rest periods. Slowing down your pace is not a sign of weakness; it's a smart way to stay safe when humidity is high.
