The Real Culprit: Relative Humidity
The main reason for that sticky feeling isn't the heat, but the humidity. Specifically, it's the 'relative humidity'—a measure of how much water vapour is in the air compared to the maximum amount it could hold at that temperature. During the Indian monsoon,
the air is naturally laden with moisture, often pushing relative humidity levels above 70% or 80%. This means the air is already quite saturated with water, which is the root of the problem.
How Your Body Tries to Cool Down
Your body has a brilliant, built-in air conditioning system: sweating. When you get warm, you perspire. The magic happens when that sweat evaporates from your skin. This process of evaporation requires energy, which it pulls from your body in the form of heat. As the sweat turns from a liquid to a gas, it carries that heat away, effectively cooling you down. This is why a dry heat, even at a higher temperature, can feel more comfortable—your sweat evaporates almost instantly, keeping you cool and dry.
When the Cooling System Fails
This is where high humidity throws a spanner in the works. When the air is already full of water vapour, there's very little room for your sweat to go. Evaporation slows down dramatically or even stops altogether. Your body keeps producing sweat in an attempt to cool down, but instead of evaporating, it just sits on your skin. This layer of un-evaporated sweat is what causes that signature 'sticky' and 'clammy' sensation. You end up feeling both hot and wet, as your body's primary cooling mechanism is rendered ineffective by the moisture-heavy air.
The Night-Time Humidity Paradox
But why does it often feel worse at night when the temperature is lower? It boils down to a simple principle of physics: cooler air can hold less moisture than warm air. As the temperature drops after sunset, the total amount of water vapour in the atmosphere doesn't just disappear. Instead, because the air's capacity to hold water has shrunk, the relative humidity skyrockets, often approaching 100%. This point is known as the dew point, where the air is completely saturated. So, even though the thermometer shows a pleasant number, the air is so full of moisture that your sweat has absolutely no chance of evaporating, leading to maximum stickiness just when you're trying to sleep.
More Than Just Discomfort
This sticky feeling is more than just an annoyance; it has health implications. When your body can't cool itself effectively, your core temperature can rise, putting extra strain on your cardiovascular system. This can lead to fatigue, dehydration, heat exhaustion, and make it difficult to get restful sleep. During humid monsoon spells, traditional coolers that rely on evaporation can also become ineffective. To manage, it's helpful to wear lightweight, breathable fabrics, stay hydrated, and improve air circulation with a fan to at least keep air moving across your skin. While fans don't reduce humidity, the movement can provide some relief.
