A New Hub for Financial Research
The Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA) has established the Mattu Centre for Research in Security Pricing and Corporate Finance. Announced on July 13, 2026, this new Centre of Excellence is designed to be a powerhouse for financial research
with a specific focus on Indian capital markets. It was established with philanthropic support from IIMA alumnus Ravi Mattu, a former executive at the global investment management firm PIMCO. The Centre's primary mission is to enhance India's finance research ecosystem by building India-specific databases, fostering collaboration, and producing evidence-based research that can inform stakeholders from academia, industry, and government.
Focus on Markets, Governance, and Policy
The Centre will concentrate its research efforts on several key areas critical to India's financial landscape. These include asset pricing, corporate finance, market microstructure, and corporate governance. A major goal is to create research that is not only academically rigorous but also practically relevant to the challenges faced by businesses, investors, regulators, and policymakers in the country. By bringing these diverse groups together through seminars, workshops, and conferences, the Centre aims to create a vibrant dialogue around the key issues shaping Indian financial markets and help address emerging challenges in the nation's financial ecosystem.
The Power of Data and Analytics
A core objective of the Mattu Centre is to build a robust research infrastructure, which has been a significant challenge in India. This involves creating comprehensive financial databases and analytical resources specifically for the Indian context. By improving access to reliable data, the Centre empowers researchers to conduct high-quality empirical studies on Indian capital markets. This analytical foundation is crucial for moving beyond theory and understanding the real-world mechanics of security pricing, investment behaviour, and corporate financial decisions. IIMA Director Professor Bharat Bhasker noted that creating these robust, India-specific databases will help address structural challenges in the country's financial markets.
Anticipated Benefits and Broader Impact
The establishment of the Centre promises several key benefits. For academia, it will strengthen research capabilities and nurture the next generation of finance scholars focused on India. For the financial industry and investors, its research will offer practical insights into everything from asset valuation to market trends. Perhaps most importantly, for regulators and policymakers, the Centre aims to provide evidence-based analysis to support the development of sound public policy. This collaboration between academia and government is vital for creating regulations that are effective and responsive to the evolving needs of India's economy. The initiative is seen as a way to contribute to management education and the long-term development of capital markets.
Potential Limitations and Challenges
While the Centre's ambitions are high, it faces inherent challenges. A significant hurdle in India's academic landscape has been the historical disconnect between research and teaching, and the broader gap between academic findings and on-the-ground policy implementation. The Centre's success will depend on its ability to effectively bridge this divide and ensure its research is not only published but also actively used by practitioners and policymakers. Furthermore, while the focus on India-specific data is a major strength, collecting and maintaining high-quality, comprehensive data is a continuous and resource-intensive task. The real-world impact of such research can also be limited by external factors like financial illiteracy and the digital divide, which affect how financial products and information are accessed and understood by the wider population.
