Why Your Data Is the Real Currency
When you use consumer versions of ChatGPT (like the Free or Plus tiers), your conversations can become part of the massive dataset used to train future AI models. This doesn't mean a human is reading your diary, but it does mean your prompts, ideas, and
the information you provide are fed back into the system. Anything you share—a business idea, personal story, or sensitive query—could theoretically shape a response for another user down the line. While OpenAI has security measures in place, data breaches have happened, exposing user chat titles and other information. It's essential to treat any information you type as potentially public and avoid sharing personally identifiable information, financial details, or confidential work documents.
Take Control: Turn Off Model Training
The single most important setting you can change is to opt out of having your data used for training. This is a simple toggle in your settings that stops your future conversations from being fed back into the training pile. To do this, go to 'Settings' and find 'Data Controls'. From there, you can turn off the option labeled “Improve the model for everyone”. Crucially, this allows you to keep your chat history for reference, unlike older privacy settings which required deleting your history to opt out of training. For business users on Enterprise or Team plans, data is not used for training by default.
Use Temporary Chats for Sensitive Topics
For conversations you know are sensitive, OpenAI offers a 'Temporary Chat' mode. Chats started in this mode are not saved to your history and are not used for model training. OpenAI does retain these chats for up to 30 days to monitor for abuse, after which they are deleted. This feature is ideal for one-off queries involving information you would rather not have permanently associated with your account. You can start a temporary chat by clicking the option at the top of a new chat window.
The Risks of Custom GPTs and Shared Links
The GPT Store allows users to create and use custom versions of ChatGPT, but this introduces new privacy risks. These custom GPTs can connect to third-party applications that OpenAI does not vet for security. This means data you share in a custom GPT could be sent to an external service with its own, potentially less secure, data policies. Research has shown that many custom GPTs have inadequate security, making it possible for malicious actors to extract uploaded files or sensitive data. Be extremely cautious with what information you provide to custom GPTs and always assume the data could be exposed.
Reviewing Memory and Connected Apps
ChatGPT's 'Memory' feature allows the AI to remember details about you across different conversations for a more personalized experience. While convenient, it's easy to forget what personal details or preferences you've allowed it to store. It's wise to periodically review and clear your Memory in the settings. Similarly, if you've used “Sign in with ChatGPT” to access other services, review these connections. While convenient, they create a link between your accounts. It's good practice to audit and remove any connections you no longer use.
How to Export or Delete Your Data
You have the right to see what data OpenAI holds on you and to delete your account entirely. You can export a copy of your chat history through the 'Data Controls' in your settings. If you decide to leave the service, you can delete your account permanently. This action is irreversible and will prevent you from accessing any OpenAI services with that email again. The process can be initiated through your account settings or via OpenAI's privacy portal. Upon deletion, OpenAI will delete your data within 30 days, unless legally required to retain it.
