The Annual Festival Scramble
Every year, the months of October and November witness a massive movement of people from Mumbai to their hometowns across India to celebrate Diwali and Chhath Puja. This period creates an overwhelming demand for train tickets, particularly on routes to Uttar
Pradesh and Bihar, leaving regular services packed and waitlists running into the hundreds within minutes of bookings opening. The scramble for a confirmed seat becomes a stressful ordeal for millions. Recognizing this recurring challenge, both Central and Western Railway have stepped in with a plan to add capacity and make the journey home a little easier for festive travellers.
Central Railway's Extensive Plan
Central Railway has taken the lead by announcing 418 special train services to cater to the festive rush. These trains will connect key Mumbai stations like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) with high-demand destinations. A significant focus is on the corridor to North India, with 64 daily special services planned between CSMT and Gorakhpur from October 16 to November 16. Additional bi-weekly services will also run from LTT to Banaras and Mau. To serve passengers heading south, weekly AC special services are scheduled between CSMT and Chennai Beach, and between CSMT and SMVT Bengaluru. Services within Maharashtra have also been boosted, with special trains connecting Mumbai to Latur, Nagpur, and Kolhapur throughout October and November.
Western Railway Boosts Connectivity
Western Railway is complementing these efforts by launching its own set of special trains from stations like Mumbai Central and Bandra Terminus. These services are primarily aimed at clearing the heavy traffic towards destinations in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, such as Patna, Danapur, Gorakhpur, and Chhapra. Announcing the services, which will run through October and November, Western Railway emphasized that these trains will feature a mix of coach classes, including AC 2-Tier, AC 3-Tier, Sleeper, and General coaches to accommodate different passenger needs. The railway zone has also extended the runs of some existing special services, like the Dadar-Bhusaval weekly special, through November to provide further options for travellers.
How to Book Your Tickets
Bookings for many of these special festival trains began on September 27 and 28. Tickets can be booked through all computerized Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters and on the official IRCTC website (irctc.co.in) and mobile app. Given the extremely high demand, it is crucial to act fast. Passengers are advised to have their travel details and passenger information ready to speed up the booking process. Using digital payment methods like UPI or the IRCTC eWallet can also save precious seconds during the transaction. For unreserved coaches on these special trains, tickets can be booked via the UTS mobile app. Railway officials have strongly urged passengers to book early and travel only with a valid, confirmed ticket to avoid any last-minute issues.
Planning Is Still Key
While these hundreds of additional services offer a significant reprieve, the demand during the festival season remains immense. These special trains often run with 'special fares,' which may be higher than regular train tickets due to dynamic pricing. Passengers should check the fare details before confirming their booking. For detailed timings, halts, and real-time updates on train schedules, travellers are encouraged to use the National Train Enquiry System (NTES) app or website. Planning your journey well in advance, even with the availability of these special services, is the best strategy to ensure a smooth and comfortable trip home for the celebrations.
