The Golden Gates Are Closing (Slightly)
For years, complimentary airport lounge access was a staple perk of many credit cards in India, turning crowded terminals into comfortable waiting areas. This benefit became a symbol of aspirational travel for a new generation of flyers. But recently,
banks have begun rolling back this unconditional access. Major issuers like ICICI Bank and Axis Bank, among others, have introduced a significant change: spend-based eligibility. Instead of being an automatic benefit, cardholders must now often meet a minimum spending threshold in a preceding quarter to unlock lounge access for the next. This threshold can range from ₹50,000 to ₹75,000 or more per quarter, depending on the card. This shift effectively transforms the perk from a passive benefit into a reward for active, high-volume users.
Why Banks Are Tightening the Rules
The move isn't arbitrary; it’s a calculated business decision. Firstly, the popularity of lounge access has led to significant overcrowding, diminishing the 'premium' experience they were meant to offer. Banks pay a fee to lounge operators for every visit, and as card issuance boomed, these costs became financially unsustainable. By introducing spending criteria, banks can ensure the perk is reserved for their more engaged and profitable customers. It also helps differentiate their truly premium cards, which may still offer unconditional access, from mid-tier ones. This strategy rewards higher spending and helps manage the operational costs associated with maintaining these popular benefits, ensuring the lounges remain a viable and exclusive offering.
The New Playbook: Focused Spending
In response, young professionals are ditching old habits of spreading expenses across multiple cards. The new winning strategy is 'focused spending' or 'card consolidation'. Instead of using different cards for different rewards, they are now channeling all their monthly expenditures—from groceries and utilities to dining and online shopping—onto a single primary card. The goal is simple: ensure the total quarterly spend on that one card crosses the bank's minimum threshold. This requires a conscious shift from passively owning cards to actively managing them. Users are meticulously tracking their spending to ensure they hit their targets, turning what was once a simple perk into a strategic financial goal.
Choosing Your Champion Card Wisely
This new landscape demands a more discerning approach to choosing a credit card. It's no longer enough to be swayed by a large sign-up bonus or a long list of features. Young consumers are now advised to pick a 'champion card' whose spending requirements align with their natural financial behaviour. Before applying, it's crucial to estimate your average quarterly spending and select a card with a realistic threshold. For instance, if you consistently spend around ₹60,000 a quarter, a card with a ₹75,000 spend requirement might lead to unnecessary purchases. The smart choice is a card where your routine spending naturally unlocks the benefits you value most, turning your everyday expenses into a ticket to pre-flight comfort.
Is Chasing the Perk Still Worth It?
With these added hurdles, some are questioning if the hassle is justified. For infrequent travelers, the effort required to meet a high spending target may outweigh the benefit of a few lounge visits per year. However, for the young professional who travels regularly for work or leisure, the lounge remains a valuable oasis of calm and productivity. It offers complimentary food and Wi-Fi, saving on airport costs and providing a comfortable space to work or relax. The key is a personal cost-benefit analysis. For many, the answer is yes—the game has changed, but with a focused spending strategy, the reward of a peaceful pre-flight experience is still very much within reach.
