The Indian monsoon is the lifeblood of the subcontinent, and predicting its behaviour is critical. Earth Observation Satellites play a pivotal role in modern weather forecasting. By measuring sea surface temperatures, wind patterns over the ocean, and atmospheric moisture, satellites like EOS-05 provide crucial inputs for meteorological models. This allows the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue more timely and accurate forecasts, not just for the monsoon but also for extreme weather events. Better predictions help everyone, from farmers planning their sowing season to city dwellers preparing for a heavy downpour and authorities managing water resources.
3. Quicker Disaster Warnings and Response
India is prone to natural disasters like floods, cyclones, and landslides. ISRO's satellites are frontline tools in the country's disaster management framework. An Earth Observation Satellite can track the formation and path of a cyclone, monitor rising river levels to warn of impending floods, and detect forest fires even in remote areas. The near real-time data allows the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and other agencies to issue timely evacuation warnings and plan rescue and relief operations more effectively. This capability to see a disaster unfolding from space directly helps in saving lives and reducing damage on the ground.

This information is used to generate Potential Fishing Zone (PFZ) advisories, which tell fishermen exactly where to find fish. This saves them enormous amounts of time and fuel. Furthermore, these satellites monitor coastal erosion, sea-level changes, and ocean pollution, providing vital data to protect fragile coastal ecosystems and the communities that depend on them.
