The Magic of Overnight Trains
India's overnight trains are a quintessential part of the travel experience, offering a practical and atmospheric way to cover vast distances. For a budget traveler, they are a double win: the journey combines transportation and a night's accommodation
in one affordable ticket. Sleeper Class, while basic, is incredibly cost-effective and a great way to meet fellow travelers. For a bit more comfort and security, 3-Tier AC (3A) offers air-conditioning and bedding at a price that still keeps backpacker budgets in mind. By travelling through the night, you maximize your daylight hours for what truly matters—exploring the national parks and, with any luck, spotting the majestic Bengal tiger.
From Delhi to Ranthambore National Park
Ranthambore in Rajasthan is one of the most accessible tiger reserves in the country, and the train is the best way to get there. The nearest railway station is Sawai Madhopur (SWM), located just 14 km from the park's main entrance. Numerous overnight trains run from Delhi to Sawai Madhopur, making it an incredibly convenient route. The journey typically takes around six to eight hours. You can board a train in the late evening from New Delhi and arrive in Sawai Madhopur at dawn, perfectly timed to check into a budget guesthouse and book an afternoon safari. From the station, auto-rickshaws and taxis are readily available for the short trip to the park area.
Gateway to Corbett National Park
Jim Corbett National Park, India's oldest national park, is nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas in Uttarakhand. The ideal railway gateway is Ramnagar (RMR), which is directly connected to Delhi. The Ranikhet Express is a popular overnight choice for many travelers, departing Delhi in the evening and arriving in Ramnagar early the next morning. The station is just on the outskirts of the town, and from there, it's easy to find local transport to the various zones of the park. This direct connection makes it a top choice for backpackers looking for a straightforward journey to witness not just tigers, but also wild elephants and a stunning variety of birdlife.
Central India's Tiger Hub: Bandhavgarh and Kanha
For those wanting to explore the dense forests of Madhya Pradesh, trains provide a vital link. Bandhavgarh National Park is best reached via Umaria (UMR) railway station, which is only a 35 km, one-hour drive away. There are overnight trains from Delhi that stop at Umaria, making it a feasible option. Alternatively, Katni (KTE) and Jabalpur (JBP) are larger railway junctions, about 100 km and 190 km away respectively, with connections from all over India, including Mumbai and Kolkata. These stations also serve as the gateway to Kanha National Park, another premier tiger habitat. From these hubs, travelers can take a bus or hire a taxi to complete the journey to the park gates.
Reaching Tadoba in Maharashtra
Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve in Maharashtra has gained a reputation for frequent tiger sightings. For train travelers, the most convenient station is Chandrapur (CD), located about 45 km from the popular Moharli gate of the park. Several overnight trains from major cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Hyderabad connect to Chandrapur. Another major hub is Nagpur (NGP), which is about 150 km away but offers excellent connectivity from across the country. If your safari is booked for the park's northern gates like Kolara, arriving in Nagpur might be a better option. The combination of good train links and high tiger density makes Tadoba a prime target for a budget wildlife adventure.
Tips for the Backpacker
To make your journey smooth, always book your train tickets well in advance, especially during peak season (October to June), as popular routes fill up quickly. Use the official IRCTC website or app for bookings. When arriving, connect with your guesthouse beforehand; many can arrange a pickup from the station at a reasonable price. For safaris, look for options to share a jeep with other travelers at the park gate or through your accommodation. This significantly cuts down on costs compared to hiring a private vehicle. Finally, pack light, carry snacks and water for the train, and embrace the journey—it's all part of the adventure.
