A Major Boost in Services
To manage the anticipated surge in passenger traffic, both Central Railway (CR) and Western Railway (WR) have introduced hundreds of special train trips. Central Railway has announced 418 special services connecting Mumbai with destinations across the country.
These trains aim to provide smooth and convenient travel options during the peak period of October and November 2026. The services originate from major Mumbai terminals like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT), and Bandra Terminus, ensuring wide coverage for outbound passengers. This proactive measure by the railways is designed to prevent overcrowding on regular trains and offer more confirmed travel options for families and individuals.
Key Routes from Central Railway
Central Railway's special services cater to high-demand corridors. For those travelling to Uttar Pradesh, 64 daily special services will run between CSMT and Gorakhpur from mid-October to mid-November. Connections to the south have also been enhanced, with weekly AC special services to Chennai and Bengaluru. The Mumbai-Bengaluru special (01013/01014) will make seven trips in each direction between October and November. Additionally, there are weekly superfast specials to Nagpur (02139/02140) and bi-weekly services to Latur (01105/01106). Other announced routes include services from LTT to Mau and Banaras, and from CSMT to Kolhapur, covering a broad spectrum of destinations within Maharashtra and beyond.
Western Railway's Festival Offerings
Western Railway is also bolstering its network, focusing heavily on routes towards North and East India to accommodate the Diwali and Chhath Puja rush. Special trains will connect Mumbai's Bandra Terminus and Mumbai Central with key destinations in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, such as Danapur, Gorakhpur, and Subedarganj. Furthermore, Western Railway has extended the trips of some existing special services, like the Dadar-Bhusaval weekly special, until late November 2026 to provide sustained support throughout the festival period. These trains are crucial for the millions of people who travel from Maharashtra back to their hometowns to celebrate with their families.
Booking Your Tickets: A Guide
Booking for these special trains, often designated with a '0' prefix, has already commenced. Passengers can book their tickets through the official IRCTC website (irctc.co.in), the RailOne mobile application, and at all computerised Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters. It's important to note that these festival special trains run on special charges, meaning fares might be slightly higher than usual. Authorities strongly advise passengers to book their tickets well in advance to secure confirmed berths and avoid last-minute hassles. Given the high demand, seats on these trains fill up exceptionally fast, often within minutes of bookings opening.
What to Expect on Your Journey
While these additional services provide much-needed capacity, passengers should still be prepared for a busy travel environment. Stations will be crowded, and trains are expected to run at full capacity. To manage this, railways are deploying additional staff and strengthening security measures at key stations. Passengers are urged to travel only with valid, confirmed tickets to avoid inconvenience. For the most accurate, real-time information on train schedules, platform numbers, and potential delays, travellers should regularly check the National Train Enquiry System (NTES) portal or app before and during their journey. Arriving at the station well ahead of your departure time is also highly recommended to navigate the festival rush smoothly.
