Prep Your Canvas
Before you even think about colour, the longevity of your blush begins with skin preparation. Makeup applied to dry or unprepared skin is prone to fading quickly. For intimate evening dinners where you want your glow to last, start with a well-moisturised
face. Allow your moisturiser to fully absorb, creating a hydrated and smooth base. Following up with a primer will not only help your foundation glide on but will also give your blush something to grip onto, ensuring it stays vibrant from the first toast to the last farewell.
Choose Your Blush Wardrobe
Layering is all about combining different formulas to get the best of both worlds: the dewy, skin-like finish of a cream or liquid and the staying power of a powder. For deeper complexions, choosing the right shades is crucial to avoid an ashy or barely-there look. Steer clear of pale pinks and opt for rich, saturated hues like deep berries, warm terracottas, vibrant corals, and rich plums. These shades possess the pigment intensity needed to beautifully complement and 'pop' on Indian skin tones. Having both a cream or liquid and a coordinating powder blush is the key to this technique.
Step 1: The Cream or Liquid Base
Begin with your cream or liquid blush. This initial layer provides a luminous, 'lit-from-within' base of colour that melts into the skin. Using your fingers or a damp sponge, apply the product to the high points of your cheeks, blending upwards towards your temples for a lifted effect. Avoid applying it too low or too close to your nose. The warmth from your fingers helps the product blend seamlessly. This first step ensures that even if the top powder layer fades slightly through the evening, you will still have a healthy-looking flush underneath.
Step 2: Set and Intensify with Powder
Once your cream blush is blended, it is time to lock it in with a powder blush. This second layer not only sets the cream product, preventing it from moving, but also adds another dimension of colour and intensity that is perfect for evening lighting. Use a fluffy blush brush to lightly tap or stipple the powder over the exact area where you applied the cream. Avoid a heavy sweeping motion, which can disturb the base layer. Tapping gently presses the powder into the cream, fusing them together for maximum longevity.
Step 3: Blend and Finish
The final step is to ensure your layered blush looks like a natural, seamless part of your skin. Take a clean, large fluffy brush and lightly blend the edges of your blush to diffuse any harsh lines. This marries the colour with the rest of your base makeup. For an extra festive touch, you can apply a subtle highlighter on the very top of your cheekbones, just above the blush. To ensure your masterpiece lasts all evening, a final spritz of setting spray will lock everything in place, guaranteeing your radiant glow endures through dinner and beyond.
