A New Space Race Fueled by Policy
The game changed in 2020. Historic government reforms opened the floodgates for private companies to participate in end-to-end space activities. The establishment of the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) created a single-window
agency to guide and authorize these new ventures, transforming the sector from a government monopoly to a thriving public-private ecosystem. This was further solidified by the Indian Space Policy 2023, which clarified the roles of ISRO as an R&D-focused entity and private players as commercial operators. The goal is ambitious: to grow India's slice of the global space economy from around $8.4 billion today to a projected $44 billion by 2033.
The Rocket Builders: Skyroot and AgniKul
At the forefront of this revolution are startups building India's first private launch vehicles. Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace, founded by former ISRO scientists, made history in July 2026 with the successful orbital launch of its Vikram-1 rocket. This landmark achievement made India only the third country, after the US and China, to have a private company send a rocket into orbit. Close on its heels is Chennai-based AgniKul Cosmos, which has pioneered the world's first single-piece 3D-printed rocket engine. The company successfully launched a suborbital test flight in May 2024 and is now planning a groundbreaking mission to recover a rocket booster at sea, a crucial step towards reusability.
Eyes in the Sky: Pixxel's Satellite Constellation
It’s not just about the rockets. Bengaluru-based Pixxel is making waves globally with its constellation of hyperspectral imaging satellites. These advanced satellites can see the Earth in hundreds of spectral bands, providing unprecedented data for agriculture, environmental monitoring, and urban planning. Having successfully launched six 'Firefly' satellites, Pixxel is providing daily imaging capabilities and has plans to expand its constellation to over two dozen by 2025, serving a global client base and attracting significant international investment.
An Entire Ecosystem Takes Flight
The boom extends far beyond launch vehicles and satellites. A thriving ecosystem of over 400 startups is now active across the entire space value chain. Companies like Bellatrix Aerospace are developing eco-friendly satellite propulsion systems and orbital transfer vehicles, acting as 'space taxis' to deliver satellites to precise orbits. Others, such as Dhruva Space, Ananth Technologies, and GalaxEye, are building critical satellite components, ground station services, and innovative sensor technologies. This diversification is attracting talent, with many experienced ISRO scientists moving to the private sector, and is drawing in significant foreign direct investment, especially after FDI rules were liberalized in 2024.
