The Golden Season: Why Autumn?
The period from October to November marks a magical transition in Meghalaya. After months of heavy rain, the landscape is left impossibly vibrant and green, while the skies clear up for comfortable, sunny days with temperatures often ranging between 15°C
and 25°C. This post-monsoon season offers the best of both worlds: the waterfalls around Sohra (formerly Cherrapunji) are still impressively full, but the incessant downpours have stopped, making trekking and sightseeing a pleasant experience. It’s a brief, ideal window before the chill of winter sets in and the water levels in the falls begin to recede. The air is crisp, humidity drops, and the trails are safer to navigate, making it the prime time for adventure.
Walking Among Giants: The Living Root Bridges
Meghalaya’s living root bridges are a testament to ingenious natural engineering by the Khasi people. The most famous of these is the Umshiang Double-Decker Root Bridge in Nongriat village. Reaching it is an adventure in itself, involving a trek down more than 3,500 stone steps into a dense, tropical valley. The journey, which can take four to six hours round-trip, leads you across narrow suspension bridges before revealing the spectacular two-tiered bridge. For those seeking a less strenuous experience, the Riwai Living Root Bridge near Mawlynnong village is far more accessible, requiring only a short walk. Regardless of which you choose, visiting in autumn means the paths are less slippery and the surrounding forest is at its most verdant. Hiring a local guide is highly recommended for the Nongriat trek.
Chasing Sohra’s Majestic Waterfalls
Sohra is legendary for its dramatic waterfalls, and autumn is an excellent time to see them in their full glory without the obstruction of monsoon fog. Nohkalikai Falls, India's tallest plunge waterfall, drops spectacularly into a turquoise pool, offering a breathtaking view from its easily accessible platform. Nearby, the Nohsngithiang Falls, also known as the Seven Sisters Falls, presents a magnificent curtain of water cascading over limestone cliffs. In the post-monsoon months, the flow is powerful and the views are generally clear. Other notable falls to explore include the three-tiered Wei Sawdong Falls and the powerful Dainthlen Falls, each offering a unique and memorable sight.
Planning Your Autumn Trip
The best way to begin your journey is by flying into Guwahati, Assam, and hiring a cab for the scenic three-to-four-hour drive to Shillong, Meghalaya's capital. Sohra is another two-hour drive from Shillong and serves as the best base for exploring the waterfalls and the Nongriat trek. Accommodation options range from hotels in Shillong and Sohra to rustic homestays in villages like Nongriat, which offer a more immersive experience. For clothing, pack layers: light t-shirts for daytime treks and a warm jacket for the cool evenings. Sturdy, comfortable trekking shoes with good grip are non-negotiable, especially for the hike to the root bridges. While the rain is less frequent, it's wise to carry a light rain jacket or an umbrella, just in case.
