Your Body's Internal Clock
Deep inside every one of us is a master timekeeper known as the circadian rhythm. It’s a 24-hour internal clock, located in a part of the brain called the suprachiasmatic nucleus, that governs our sleep-wake cycles, hormone release, and even body temperature.
This central clock is primarily set by light and darkness. But it’s not the only clock in town. Our organs, including the liver, pancreas, and gut, have their own peripheral clocks. While the master clock responds to light, these peripheral clocks are strongly influenced by when we eat. This new field of study is called chrononutrition.
The Metabolic Connection
Our bodies are biologically primed to digest and metabolise food most efficiently during the day. Processes like insulin sensitivity, which is crucial for managing blood sugar, peak in the morning and decline throughout the day. Eating earlier aligns with this natural metabolic high point. When you eat during daylight hours, your body is better prepared to handle the incoming nutrients. It uses glucose more effectively, and digestion is more efficient. This synchronicity helps regulate blood sugar, supports weight management, and can reduce the risk of developing insulin resistance. Studies suggest that consuming a larger portion of your daily calories earlier in the day may have significant benefits for metabolic health.
The Problem with Late-Night Meals
Modern life, with its long work hours and glowing screens, often pushes our last meal late into the evening. This creates a conflict between our behaviour and our biology. Eating close to bedtime means consuming food when your body’s digestive and metabolic systems are winding down for the night. Insulin sensitivity is at its lowest in the evening, which can lead to higher blood sugar spikes after a late meal. This misalignment can disrupt sleep, increase inflammation, and over time, may contribute to weight gain and an increased risk for metabolic disorders like type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Studies have found that late eating is associated with increased obesity risk, higher body fat, and can make weight loss more difficult.
What is Circadian-Aligned Eating?
The principle is simple: try to consume your meals within a consistent window during daylight hours and allow for a longer fasting period overnight. This is often called time-restricted eating (TRE). A common approach is to limit your eating to an 8 to 10-hour window, for example, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. This gives your body a 14 to 16-hour fasting period overnight, allowing it to rest and repair. Research focusing on early time-restricted eating (eTRE), where the eating window ends in the afternoon, has shown consistent benefits for improving glucose levels and body weight. The goal is to create a predictable daily rhythm that allows your metabolic organs to work when they are most effective and rest when they are not.
Simple Steps to Get Started
Shifting your meal timing doesn't require a complete overhaul. Start with small, manageable changes. Try to have your last meal at least two to three hours before you go to sleep. If you typically eat dinner late, see if you can gradually bring it forward by 15-minute increments each week. Pay attention to breakfast; eating a balanced meal earlier in the day can help set your metabolic rhythm and may reduce cravings for late-night snacks. Avoid eating large, heavy meals in the evening. Instead, make breakfast and lunch your more substantial meals. The key is consistency, as establishing a regular routine helps synchronise your body’s internal clocks.
