Indian Railways is redefining overnight travel with the Vande Bharat Sleeper, a train designed to surpass the legacy of the iconic Rajdhani Express. A key innovation lies in a seemingly simple feature: a sliding door. But how does this change the game?
A New Chapter in Onboard Privacy
Anyone who has travelled overnight in a conventional AC coach, including the esteemed Rajdhani Express, knows the struggle of the berths near the doors. These spots are often subject to constant disturbances—the clatter of the main door, frequent foot traffic to the toilets, and light filtering into the sleeping area. It’s a perennial complaint that can disrupt a good night’s sleep. The Vande Bharat Sleeper tackles this head-on with a clever design tweak. A sensor-based sliding door separates the main passenger corridor from the entrance vestibule. This creates a buffer zone, meaning the berths are no longer directly adjacent to the high-traffic entry and exit points. This simple but effective separation promises a quieter, more private, and less disturbed environment for passengers, especially those who would otherwise be in the most disruptive seats.
Rajdhani: The Gold Standard It Aims to Beat
For decades, the Rajdhani Express has been the benchmark for premium, long-distance train travel in India. It symbolised speed, priority on the network, and a level of comfort that was a class apart when introduced. With its fully air-conditioned coaches and onboard catering, it became the default choice for comfortable overnight journeys. Even today, its LHB (Linke Hofmann Busch) coaches are known for their relative comfort and safety. However, the fundamental coach design, where the main aisle runs directly alongside all berths and vestibules open right into the passenger area, has remained largely unchanged. The Vande Bharat Sleeper isn’t just an incremental upgrade; it represents a fundamental rethinking of the passenger space, aiming to solve problems that have been inherent in even the best existing trains.
Beyond the Door: A Holistic Upgrade
The Vande Bharat Sleeper's superiority is not just about one door. The entire train is a self-propelled trainset, which means it doesn't need a separate locomotive. This allows for faster acceleration and deceleration, potentially cutting down journey times. Inside, the experience is elevated further. Berths are designed with better cushioning, and the ladders for upper berths are more ergonomic. The train features advanced noise insulation for a quieter ride, sensor-based lighting in common areas, and modern bio-vacuum toilets that are ergonomically designed to be odour-free. First AC passengers even get access to a shower with hot water. These amenities, combined with automatic exterior doors and fully sealed gangways to keep dust out, create an environment that feels more like a modern transit system than a conventional train.
Speed, Safety, and Engineering
Under the hood, the differences are even more stark. The Vande Bharat Sleeper is designed for a top speed of 160 km/h, compared to the Rajdhani's operational limit, which is generally lower. Safety has also seen a major overhaul. The Vande Bharat comes equipped with Kavach, India's indigenous anti-collision system. The coach body is built with crashworthy materials and design elements that meet high European fire safety standards (EN45545 HL3), a significant step up in passenger protection. While Rajdhani trains are considered safe, the Vande Bharat platform incorporates the latest generation of safety technology, from CCTV surveillance to advanced fire detection and suppression systems, making it one of the safest travel options on the network.
The Future of Overnight Journeys
The first prototype of the Vande Bharat Sleeper, manufactured by BEML, was unveiled in September 2024, with the first commercial service reportedly beginning in early 2026. With a configuration of 16 coaches—comprising AC First Class, AC 2nd tier, and AC 3rd tier—the train can accommodate 823 passengers. The plan is to roll out these trains progressively, replacing older rolling stock on long distance overnight routes. While the Rajdhani Express set a standard that has served India well for over 50 years, the Vande Bharat Sleeper is clearly engineered for the next generation of travellers. It’s a move from mere comfort to a holistic experience where thoughtful design elements like a simple sliding door signal a much larger shift towards a quieter safer and more modern railway network.
