Indian Railways is embarking on an ambitious journey, not just across the country's vast landscapes, but through its rich history. A major expansion of special tourist trains is underway, making it easier than ever to explore India's heritage.
A New Chapter for Tourism
The driving
force behind this expansion is the 'Bharat Gaurav' policy, introduced by the Ministry of Railways to create a dedicated third segment for tourism, alongside its existing passenger and freight operations. This strategic shift, part of the 'Dekho Apna Desh' initiative to promote domestic tourism, allows private companies and state governments to lease trains from Indian Railways and operate them on theme-based circuits. The policy empowers these operators to curate unique travel experiences, deciding everything from the route and itinerary to the onboard services and tariff, with the railways ensuring fair pricing. This public-private partnership aims to leverage the expertise of the tourism sector to showcase India's cultural treasures to both domestic and international visitors.
Journeys Through Faith and History
Several flagship circuits form the backbone of this initiative. The popular Shri Ramayana Yatra, for instance, takes pilgrims on a nearly 8,000-kilometre journey to sites associated with Lord Ram, including Ayodhya, Janakpur in Nepal, and Rameshwaram. Similarly, the Buddhist Circuit Tourist Train connects key sites from the life of Buddha, such as Bodh Gaya and Sarnath, offering a profound spiritual experience. The expansion continues with specialised trains like the Guru Kripa Yatra, covering important Sikh pilgrimage sites, and the recently launched 'Divine East Temple Tour' connecting sacred destinations in Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal, and Jharkhand. These curated trips are not just train rides; they are all-inclusive packages that often cover meals, hotel stays, local transport, and guides.
Expanding to New Horizons
The network is constantly growing, with new routes being added to connect previously underserved regions and diverse heritage themes. In 2026, IRCTC announced several new circuits, including 'Garvi Gujarat' and 'Padharo Rajasthan', operating on deluxe AC trains to showcase the heritage of Western India. Another notable addition is a tourist train to the Kashmir Valley, departing from as far as Coimbatore, making the region more accessible. The initiative has also extended internationally, with a train connecting pilgrimage sites in Ayodhya with Janakpur in Nepal, strengthening cross-border cultural ties. More recently, a 'Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Circuit' was launched to highlight the forts and legacy of the Maratha warrior king in Maharashtra.
More Than Just Travel
What makes these 'special' trains unique is the holistic experience they offer. The exteriors are often vinyl-wrapped with images of Indian monuments and culture, setting the theme. Onboard, passengers find a range of amenities. Depending on the train, this can include AC coaches, modern flameless pantries for fresh vegetarian meals, infotainment systems, and CCTV for security. The semi-luxury Bharat Gaurav trains feature modernised cabins, restaurant-style dining cars, and even shower cubicles. For those seeking ultimate luxury, trains like the upgraded Golden Chariot, which covers South India, offer five-star hotel-like services, including fine dining restaurants, a spa, and plush suites. The goal is to provide a seamless, comfortable, and immersive cultural journey.
Boosting Culture and Economy
This expansion is more than a convenience for travellers; it's a significant economic and cultural undertaking. By creating new theme‐based circuits , Indian Railways is helping to bring attention to lesser‐known historical sites and distribute tourist footfall more evenly across the country . This boosts local economies by creating jobs in hospitality , transport , and for tour guides in the regions these trains visit . The all‐inclusive nature of the packages simplifies travel planning , encouraging more people to explore their own country's heritage . The initiative also serves as a platform for celebrating and preserving India’s diverse cultural , spiritual , and historical identity for a new generation of travellers .
