Why Bank Account Validation is Crucial
The Income Tax Department requires every taxpayer to have a pre-validated bank account linked to their PAN. This is a mandatory security measure to ensure your refund is sent to the correct person and account. Without a successfully validated account nominated
for a refund, the department cannot credit the amount, even if your return has been processed and the refund is approved. The process involves the e-filing portal verifying your PAN, name, and account details with your bank. If there's a mismatch, the validation fails, and your refund is put on hold.
Common Reasons for Validation Failure
A 'Refund Failed' status is often due to a handful of common issues. The most frequent reason is that the PAN is not linked to the bank account, or there is a name mismatch between your PAN records and bank records. Other typical errors include providing an incorrect account number or IFSC code, which may have changed due to bank mergers. Using a bank account that is closed, dormant, or inactive will also result in a validation failure. Identifying the specific reason for the failure is the first step toward resolving it.
Step 1: Check Your Status on the e-Filing Portal
Before taking any action, log in to the official Income Tax e-filing portal (incometax.gov.in) using your User ID (PAN) and password. Navigate to the 'My Profile' section and click on 'My Bank Account'. Here, you can view all the bank accounts you have added. The portal will display the status of each account, such as 'Validated', 'Validation in Progress', or 'Validation Failed'. If an account shows a failure, the reason will often be displayed, such as 'Name Mismatch' or 'Invalid IFSC'.
Step 2: Re-Validate or Add a New Bank Account
If validation has failed, you have two options. If the error is simple, like a typo in the account number or IFSC, you can click the 'Re-validate' option for that account. The portal will allow you to correct the details and submit the request again. However, if the issue is a name mismatch or a closed account, it is often easier to add a different, active bank account where your name and PAN details match perfectly. To do this, click 'Add Bank Account', enter the new details, and submit it for validation. The validation process can take a few working days.
Step 3: Nominate the Validated Account for Refund
Simply validating an account is not enough; you must also nominate it to receive refunds. Once an account shows the 'Validated' status, make sure the 'Nominate for Refund' toggle switch next to it is turned on. You can nominate multiple bank accounts for refunds. This step is crucial as it tells the Income Tax Department exactly where to send your money.
Step 4: Submit a 'Refund Re-issue' Request
After you have a successfully validated and nominated bank account, you must formally ask the department to send the refund again. This is done by raising a 'Refund Re-issue' request. From the e-filing portal's main menu, go to 'Services' and click on 'Refund Reissue'. The portal will display the assessment year for which the refund failed. Select it, choose your newly validated bank account, and submit the request, typically by verifying with an Aadhaar OTP. Do not file a revised return for a failed refund, as this will only cause further delays; the correct procedure is to use the refund re-issue service.
