The Visa Question: Hassle-Free Entry
The biggest travel hurdle is often the visa, but for Indian citizens, Sri Lanka has made it exceptionally simple. While it's sometimes called 'visa-free', the correct term is a free Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). As of May 2026, India is one of several
countries whose citizens can get a 30-day tourist ETA without any cost. The key is that you must apply for this ETA online before you travel. Arriving without a pre-approved ETA can cause delays or issues at immigration. The process is entirely online, requires no embassy visits, and grants a double-entry permit valid for 30 days, which is more than enough for this whirlwind tour.
Day 1: Arrival and Kandy's Sacred Heart
Fly into Colombo's Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB). From there, your Sri Lankan adventure begins with a journey to Kandy, the island's cultural capital. You can hire a pre-booked car for the most comfortable transfer (around 3-4 hours) or take a train for a more scenic, local experience. After checking into your hotel, spend the evening exploring the city's crown jewel: the Sri Dalada Maligawa, or the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. This beautiful temple complex, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is particularly atmospheric during the evening puja (ceremony). Afterwards, a gentle stroll around the adjacent Kandy Lake is the perfect way to wind down.
Day 2: The Journey to Coastal Forts
While Kandy itself is not known for forts, your journey to the coast will take you to one of Sri Lanka's most iconic fortifications. After breakfast, begin the scenic trip south towards the coast. You can take a train or a car for this leg, which will take several hours. Your destination is the magnificent Galle Fort. Originally built by the Portuguese and extensively fortified by the Dutch in the 17th century, this UNESCO World Heritage site is a living piece of history. Spend the afternoon wandering its charming, cobblestoned lanes, browsing boutique shops and art galleries, and walking along the massive ramparts that overlook the Indian Ocean. As sunset approaches, join the locals and other travellers on the fort walls for spectacular views. Spend the night in or near Galle.
Day 3: Mirissa's Golden Shores
A short drive (under an hour) from Galle brings you to the laid-back beach town of Mirissa. This is where the 'shores' part of your trip comes to life. After checking in, head straight to Mirissa Beach to relax on the golden sand and take a dip in the ocean. For an iconic photo opportunity and breathtaking sunset views, make your way to Coconut Tree Hill, a small private property famous for its cluster of perfectly angled palm trees. In the evening, the beach transforms as restaurants set up tables on the sand, offering fresh seafood dinners under the stars.
Day 4: Whale Watching and Beach Hopping
Mirissa is one of the best places in the world for whale watching, especially for spotting blue whales. The peak season runs from December to April when the seas are calmest. Tours depart early in the morning (around 6:30 AM) and last 3-5 hours. It's an unforgettable experience to see these majestic creatures in their natural habitat. In the afternoon, explore more of the coastline. You can visit the nearby Turtle Beach to snorkel and spot sea turtles or climb Parrot Rock for a different perspective of the main beach, though be cautious of the tide. Alternatively, the quieter Secret Beach offers a more secluded spot for relaxation.
Day 5: A Final Sunrise and Departure
Wake up early for one last Sri Lankan sunrise from Coconut Tree Hill or your beachfront hotel. After a leisurely breakfast, it's time to head back to Colombo's airport for your flight home. A private car is the most efficient way to make this journey (around 2.5-3 hours via the expressway). Depending on your flight schedule, you might have time for some last-minute souvenir shopping in Colombo before you depart, filled with memories of misty hills, historic walls, and sunny, golden shores.
