A Season of Sharp Contrasts
The 2026 monsoon season has been a story of uneven distribution. While some regions have grappled with floods, others are looking at significant rainfall deficits. As of early September, the country as a whole has a seasonal rainfall deficit of around
14%. The situation is particularly stark in the southern peninsula, which has recorded a substantial shortfall. States like Kerala, Karnataka, and Telangana have been among the worst-hit. Similarly, East and Northeast India are also facing a considerable deficit, with states like Jharkhand experiencing a shortfall as high as 90% as of September 4. This patchiness, with some areas receiving excess rain while others remain dry, has become a defining feature of the season.
Understanding the Monsoon 'Break'
The current quiet phase is what meteorologists refer to as a monsoon 'break'. This doesn't mean the monsoon season is over. It's a temporary lull that occurs when the monsoon trough—a low-pressure belt that is a key driver of rainfall—shifts northwards towards the foothills of the Himalayas. This shift reduces rainfall over the plains and peninsular India. While this is a normal part of the monsoon cycle, a prolonged break phase, influenced by factors like El Niño, can lead to significant deficits and warmer temperatures. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) noted that rainfall activity is likely to remain subdued over peninsular India for about a week from September 7, a classic sign of this break phase.
Impact on Agriculture and Water
The timing of this lull is critical. September rainfall is crucial for the health of standing Kharif crops, which are in their final growth stages. An extended dry spell can negatively impact yields, particularly for water-intensive crops like rice. Sowing for several key crops, including rice and maize, was already lagging behind last year's levels, and uneven rains pose a risk to food security and supplies. The deficit also affects water reservoirs, which are vital for irrigation and drinking water supplies through the drier post-monsoon months. A weak end to the season could increase pressure on these resources.
All Eyes on the Bay of Bengal
There is hope on the horizon. Forecasters are closely watching the Bay of Bengal, where a fresh cyclonic circulation is expected to form. The IMD has indicated that under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to develop over the west-central and northwest Bay of Bengal around September 11. These low-pressure systems are the primary engines of the monsoon, and their formation typically leads to a surge in rainfall activity. They draw moisture from the sea and move it over the landmass, reviving the monsoon currents.
What to Expect Next
The formation of this low-pressure system is expected to reinvigorate the monsoon, particularly over eastern and adjoining central parts of India. The IMD has already forecast fairly widespread rain over states like Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha, and Odisha between September 8 and September 12. As the system moves inland, it is expected to bring increased rainfall to other regions as well, potentially breaking the dry spell in Peninsular India during the second week of the month. While the monsoon has not officially begun its withdrawal process, this next push will be crucial in determining the final tally of the season and mitigating the deficits in some of the worst-affected areas.
