What Sparked the Alert in Maharashtra?
The concern stems from a series of recent and decisive actions by the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In early July 2026, the FDA issued a public warning against several specific cosmetic products after lab tests revealed dangerously high
levels of toxic heavy metals like mercury and lead. For instance, one product, Goree Beauty Cream, was found to contain mercury levels far exceeding the safe limit. This followed major crackdowns in June across Mumbai, Bhiwandi, and Satara, where the FDA seized crores worth of illegal and misbranded cosmetics from unlicensed manufacturing units and retailers. These raids uncovered products, including children's items, being made in unhygienic conditions without proper licenses, labels, or manufacturing details. This wasn't just a case of poor quality; it was about products with potentially severe health risks being sold to unsuspecting consumers.
The Real Dangers of Counterfeit Cosmetics
The alarm raised by the FDA is not hype; the risks are significant. The heavy metals found, like mercury and lead, are not just minor irritants. Prolonged use of products containing them can lead to serious, long-term health issues, including kidney damage, nervous system problems, and skin discoloration. In fact, reports have linked the use of one of the banned creams to kidney ailments in multiple women in Nagpur. Beyond heavy metals, counterfeit products are often manufactured in unsanitary facilities, leading to contamination with bacteria, yeast, and mould. Some seized goods globally have even tested positive for carcinogens like arsenic and beryllium. These illegal products bypass all safety and quality checks, meaning anything from ineffective formulas to hazardous industrial chemicals could be inside that deceptively professional-looking bottle.
How to Spot a Fake Product
Being a savvy consumer is your best defence. You don't need to be an expert to spot a fake. First, scrutinise the packaging. Counterfeiters often make mistakes; look for spelling errors, low-quality printing, blurry logos, or fonts that don't match the brand's official style. An unusually low price for a premium product is a major red flag. If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. Always buy from the brand's official website or authorized retailers. Be wary of unverified sellers on e-commerce sites and social media pages. Compare the product in your hand with images on the official brand website.
Read the Label Like a Pro
The information on the label—or the lack of it—tells a crucial story. A legitimate product will always have key details clearly printed. This includes the manufacturer's name and full address, a complete ingredient list, the manufacturing license number, a batch number, and the manufacturing and expiry dates. Many of the products seized by the Maharashtra FDA were missing this basic information. If any of these details are absent, the product is illegal and potentially unsafe. Some brands are also adding security features like holograms or scannable QR codes that link to a verification page, providing an extra layer of security for consumers.
Check the Product Itself
Before putting anything on your skin, take a moment to check the product's consistency, colour, and smell. Counterfeit cosmetics often have a strange texture—they might be too watery, oily, or gritty compared to the original. The colour may be slightly off, or it might have an unusual or overly strong chemical smell. Authentic products go through extensive quality control to ensure a consistent sensory experience. If the cream separates, the lipstick feels waxy, or the serum smells odd, trust your instincts and stop using it immediately. These are all signs that the product may not be genuine.
What to Do If You Suspect a Fake
If you suspect you've purchased a counterfeit item or experience an adverse reaction like a rash or irritation, stop using the product at once. Do not simply throw it away; keep the product and its packaging as evidence. You can report the product to the Maharashtra FDA through its official channels to help them track down illegal sellers. This not only protects you but also helps prevent others from being harmed. If you have a skin reaction or any health concerns, consult a dermatologist or doctor for professional medical advice.
