code is being augmented by the ability to guide an AI to generate, debug, and refine code. This skill, known as prompt engineering, is the art and science of crafting inputs to get desired outputs from AI models. It is no longer a niche expertise but a fundamental component of modern productivity. Companies are quickly discovering that an engineer who can adeptly use an AI co-pilot like Microsoft's or GitHub's is often more efficient and innovative than one who cannot. The challenge for businesses is that this new skill set cannot be identified or measured using traditional hiring methods alone.
Why Old Assessments Fall Short
Classic whiteboard interviews or isolated coding tests were designed to evaluate a developer's raw knowledge and problem-solving logic. However, they fail to capture a candidate's proficiency in the collaborative human-AI workflow that is defining the modern tech landscape. Simply asking theoretical questions about AI is insufficient. Gauging a candidate's true ability requires observing their process, their problem-solving approach when an AI provides a flawed or unexpected output, and their capacity to iterate. A developer who passively accepts AI-generated code without scrutiny is a liability. In contrast, an advanced user treats the AI as a "thought partner," using it to stress-test ideas and explore edge cases while maintaining full control and accountability. The goal is to find engineers who are strong without AI but become exponentially stronger when using it effectively.
Practical Ways to Assess Prompting Skills
To truly evaluate this competency, hiring managers need to integrate practical, hands-on assessments into their interview process. Realistic work samples are the most effective method. One powerful technique is to provide a candidate with an initial, poorly written prompt and the unsatisfactory output it generated, then ask them to refine it. This reveals their ability to diagnose issues and iterate. Another approach is a pair-programming session where the candidate uses an AI co-pilot to tackle a complex problem. The interviewer can observe how they structure their requests, handle AI errors, and integrate the generated code. These exercises should focus less on memorizing specific syntax and more on the candidate's reasoning, iterative process, and ability to articulate the trade-offs of their approach.
Interview Questions That Reveal True Competency
Beyond practical exercises, specific behavioural questions can uncover a candidate's AI fluency. Instead of generic queries, interviewers should dig into a candidate's thought process. Good questions to ask include: "Describe a complex problem you solved with the help of an AI co-pilot. What were your initial prompts, and how did you refine them?"; "How do you evaluate the quality of an AI-generated response, and what steps do you take when it's inaccurate or biased?"; "Explain a situation where you decided not to use an AI tool for a specific task and why." An advanced candidate will be able to discuss specific prompting techniques by name, such as zero-shot, few-shot, or chain-of-thought prompting, and explain why they chose one over another for a given task.
From Assessment to Onboarding
Identifying these skills during hiring is only the first step. The evolution of tech onboarding means that this assessment should directly inform a new hire's integration into the company. AI co-pilots are already being used to streamline employee onboarding, providing instant answers and automating routine tasks. For new technical hires, onboarding should include structured training on the company's best practices for using AI tools. This ensures that the high-level skills identified during the interview process are channeled effectively within the organization's specific workflows and ethical guidelines. By making AI fluency a key pillar of both hiring and onboarding, companies not only secure better talent but also accelerate time-to-productivity for new team members.
