Why Are the Schedules Changing?
Indian Railways periodically reviews and adjusts train schedules for operational reasons. These revisions are often aimed at improving punctuality, streamlining traffic on busy routes, and enhancing overall network efficiency. For passengers, even a small
adjustment of a few minutes can make the difference between catching a train and missing it. Therefore, it's crucial for anyone planning to travel on these routes to be aware of the new timings and adjust their travel plans to the station accordingly. The current changes, announced by the Northern Railway zone, specifically affect two services originating from Varanasi.
New Timing: Varanasi-Ranchi Vande Bharat
The first major change affects the Varanasi-Ranchi Vande Bharat Express (train number 20888). This service, which was flagged off in March 2024, connects Uttar Pradesh with Jharkhand and is a popular choice for travellers. It operates six days a week, with no service on Tuesdays. Previously, the train departed from Varanasi at 4:05 PM. Effective September 2, 2026, the train will now depart 10 minutes earlier, at 3:55 PM. This change is only applicable at Varanasi station; the arrival and departure times at all subsequent stations—including Deen Dayal Upadhyaya, Gaya, Koderma, and Bokaro Steel City—will remain the same. The train covers its 536-kilometre journey in approximately seven hours and 50 minutes.
New Timing: Varanasi-Deoghar Vande Bharat
The second schedule revision is for the Varanasi-Deoghar Vande Bharat Express (train number 22500). This train is an important link for pilgrims travelling to the temple town of Deoghar in Jharkhand. Similar to the Ranchi service, its departure time from Varanasi has been brought forward by 10 minutes. The train, which used to depart at 6:20 AM, will now leave at 6:10 AM, starting from September 2, 2026. As with the other change, the new timing only applies to the train's departure from Varanasi. The schedule for all other stations along its route remains unchanged.
Udaipur-Asarva Vande Bharat Extended to Surat
In other significant Vande Bharat news, the Railway Ministry has approved the extension of the Udaipur-Asarva Vande Bharat Express all the way to Surat. This move is set to greatly enhance connectivity between the Mewar region of Rajasthan and South India. According to the new timetable, the train will depart from Udaipur at 3:35 PM and reach Surat at 11:00 PM on the same day. On its return journey, it will leave Surat at 6:10 AM and arrive in Udaipur at 1:40 PM. The service will run six days a week, excluding Tuesdays, and is expected to boost trade and travel between the regions.
How to Verify Your Train Schedule
While these are the most recently announced changes, Indian Railways can update schedules at any time. Passengers are always advised to double-check their train's status before starting their journey. The most reliable way to do this is by using official sources. You can check the live status and schedule of your train on the National Train Enquiry System (NTES) website or mobile app. Timings can also be verified on the IRCTC official website and app at the time of booking your ticket. Given these recent adjustments, it is wise to re-verify your journey details, especially if you booked your tickets in advance. Arriving at the station based on an old timetable could lead to a missed train.
