Hundreds of Services Extended
In a significant move to tackle overcrowding, Central Railway has announced the extension of 216 special train services. This decision, made in early July, aims to accommodate the high passenger demand often seen during this time of year. The extensions
cover a mix of daily and weekly trains, primarily serving busy corridors between Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar. A total of 150 daily services and 66 weekly services are part of this extension, providing continuity for travellers who depend on these routes. This initiative follows a broader plan by Indian Railways to run thousands of special trips across the country between April and July to manage the summer and monsoon season rush.
Focus on High-Demand Routes
The extensions target some of the most congested routes, offering direct relief to passengers. For instance, the Pune-Danapur Daily Special (Train No. 01449/01450), previously scheduled to run until mid-July, will now operate until the end of September 2026. This alone adds 75 additional trips in each direction, a substantial increase in capacity. Other weekly specials, like the one connecting Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) to Kanpur (04152/04151) and services from Hadapsar to Jhansi, have also been extended until late September or early October. These extensions ensure that connectivity between major northern and central Indian cities remains robust, preventing a sudden drop-off in service availability.
Monsoon Adjustments on Konkan Route
Separately, but just as importantly for travellers, Central Railway has also implemented its annual monsoon timetable for trains on the Konkan Railway route, effective from mid-June to mid-October 2026. This schedule affects services connecting Mumbai with Goa, Mangaluru, and Kerala. While the primary goal of the monsoon timetable is to enhance safety on a line prone to landslides by reducing train speeds, it also leads to changes in frequency. Some popular services, including the Mumbai-Madgaon Vande Bharat and Tejas Express trains, will operate on a reduced, tri-weekly schedule during this period to ensure safe and reliable passage. Travellers on these routes are advised to check the revised schedules carefully.
What This Means for Passengers
The key takeaway for passengers is stability and increased availability. Central Railway has confirmed that for the extended special trains, the existing timings, routes, and station halts will remain unchanged. The only thing that has changed is the period of operation. This makes planning journeys straightforward, as passengers can rely on the existing timetables. The main benefit is the increased likelihood of securing a confirmed ticket on these high-demand routes, providing much-needed "breathing room" and reducing reliance on waitlisted tickets. The move is a direct response to passenger needs and aims to make travel more convenient during a busy season.
How to Book and Stay Updated
Booking for these extended services opened in early July. Passengers can reserve their seats through all official channels, including the IRCTC website and app, as well as computerized reservation counters at stations. For those travelling in unreserved coaches, tickets can be purchased via the UTS mobile app at standard fares. Given that schedules can sometimes be subject to last-minute changes, especially during the monsoon, passengers are always advised to check the live status of their train using the National Train Enquiry System (NTES) or other official railway apps before starting their journey.
