A New Window to the Western Ghats
Southern Railway has announced the introduction of an Executive Vistadome AC coach on the highly patronised Madurai-Guruvayur Express. This marks the first time a train operating through Kerala will feature such a coach, designed to offer passengers a unique
and immersive travel experience. The service is set to begin its trial run on October 22, 2026, and is already generating significant buzz, with tickets for the initial services quickly selling out and moving to a waitlist. The decision to add the coach follows the train's conversion to a modern LHB (Linke Hofmann Busch) rake in July 2026, which made it technically possible to incorporate the specialised Vistadome car. This move is seen as a major step to boost regional tourism, blending comfortable travel with the stunning natural beauty of the area.
What Exactly Is a Vistadome Coach?
For the uninitiated, a Vistadome coach is not your average railway car. It is designed specifically for sightseeing. These coaches feature massive, wide glass windows that stretch across the carriage, and transparent glass panels on the roof, offering panoramic, unobstructed views of the surrounding landscapes. Inside, passengers can find rotatable seats that can swivel up to 180 degrees, allowing them to face the direction of the best scenery regardless of the train's movement. Other modern amenities include a Wi-Fi-based passenger information system, automatic sliding doors, and a mini pantry. These features are intended to make the journey itself the main attraction, turning a simple train ride into a memorable tourism experience. Built for safety as well as comfort, the coaches use shatter-resistant laminated glass.
A Route Picked for Its Beauty
The chosen route for this trial is no accident. The Madurai-Guruvayur Express travels through the breathtaking Sengottai-Punalur ghat section of the Western Ghats. This stretch, which connects Tamil Nadu and Kerala, is renowned for its lush green valleys, rolling hills, and dense forests. Passengers will be treated to prime views of the Aryankavu Pass, a natural gap in the mountains, as well as the historic 13-arch bridge near Kazhuthurutti, an engineering marvel built over a century ago. The train's timing is perfectly suited for sightseeing, as it passes through the most scenic parts of the forest and ghats during the afternoon, providing optimal daylight for viewing. This section features five tunnels, including the nearly one-kilometre-long Aryankavu tunnel, offering a series of dramatic, postcard-worthy moments.
The Trial and Its Extension
The service is being introduced on a temporary trial basis to gauge passenger demand and operational feasibility. The initial run for the Madurai to Guruvayur train (No. 16327) is scheduled from October 22, 2026, to January 15, 2027. The return journey from Guruvayur to Madurai (No. 16328) will operate with the Vistadome coach from October 23, 2026, to January 16, 2027. The coach will not run daily; it will be attached on select days of the week. From Madurai, it will operate on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. For the return journey from Guruvayur, it will be available on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays. This schedule during a period that includes peak tourism and festive seasons will provide Southern Railway with valuable data on its popularity.
What This Means for Travellers
For travellers and nature lovers, this is a game-changer. The new service offers a fantastic opportunity to experience the Western Ghats in a way that wasn't possible before. Bookings for this unique experience are already open. The basic fare for the Executive Vistadome coach starts at around ₹515, with the cost for a full end-to-end journey from Madurai to Guruvayur being ₹1,875. The immediate and overwhelming response, with tickets becoming waitlisted for the first few weekends, indicates a strong public appetite for such premium, experience-driven travel. The success of this nearly three-month trial could pave the way for the permanent addition of the Vistadome coach on this route and potentially the introduction of similar services on other scenic railway lines across Southern India.
