The Big News: A Direct Flight to Toronto
In a significant move for India-Canada connectivity, Air India has announced a new seasonal non-stop flight route directly connecting Mumbai with Toronto. This is a major development, as it will be the only carrier operating direct flights between the two
major cities during the winter season. Scheduled to run three times a week from October 25, 2026, to March 26, 2027, the service will be operated on an upgraded Boeing 777-300ER aircraft. This new route simplifies travel for tourists, students, and those visiting family, eliminating the need for layovers in Delhi or other international hubs. With nearly 2,000 additional seats available weekly, the journey to the Great White North from India’s financial capital is suddenly shorter and more convenient than ever before.
First Step: Navigating the Canadian Visa
Before you start browsing for hotels, the most critical part of your planning is securing a visa. For Indian passport holders, a trip to Canada for tourism requires a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), often simply called a visitor visa. The application process is now entirely online via the official Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) portal, and requires submitting biometric information (fingerprints and a photograph) at a designated visa application centre. It is crucial to demonstrate strong ties to India, such as a stable job or family, and have sufficient funds for your trip. Processing times can vary significantly, so it is highly advisable to apply at least three to four months before your planned travel dates to avoid any last-minute stress.
When to Go: Picking the Perfect Season
Canada offers dramatically different experiences depending on the season. The new Mumbai-Toronto flight operates through the Canadian winter and early spring. While this means cold weather and snow, it’s a paradise for winter sports lovers and those hoping to find budget-friendly travel deals. However, if you prefer warmer weather, Canada's peak season is summer (June to August), which is perfect for festivals and outdoor activities, though it comes with higher prices. Many travellers consider the shoulder seasons of spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) to be the best compromise. These months offer pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and the spectacular sight of fall foliage in the autumn.
Beyond Toronto: Planning Your Itinerary
While Toronto is a fantastic, multicultural city with attractions like the CN Tower, it is just the gateway to a vast country. First-time visitors often make the mistake of trying to see too much. It is more practical to focus on one region per trip. From Toronto, you can easily explore the magnificent Niagara Falls, or take a short flight or train to the charming, French-speaking cities of Montreal and Quebec City in the East. Alternatively, you could plan a separate trip to Canada’s West Coast to experience the stunning natural beauty of Vancouver and the majestic Rocky Mountains in Banff and Jasper National Parks. Planning a focused itinerary will make your trip more relaxing and enjoyable.
Practical Tips for Indian Travellers
A few local tips can make your Canadian journey much smoother. Canada is a largely cashless society, so relying on credit cards with tap-to-pay functionality or a good Forex card is wise. It's still a good idea to have some Canadian Dollars (CAD) on hand for small purchases upon arrival. Tipping is customary in restaurants and for services, with 15-20% being the standard. Remember to pack a universal power adapter for Type A/B plugs, as the voltage is 120V. Finally, always pack in layers, regardless of the season. Canadian weather is famously unpredictable, and being able to add or remove a layer will keep you comfortable while exploring.
