A Landmark Project Comes to Life
For decades, connecting the Kashmir Valley to the rest of India's railway network was a monumental challenge. The ambitious Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project was conceived to overcome the formidable Himalayan terrain. After years of complex
engineering work, the final sections of this 272-km line were completed, making direct train travel to Srinagar possible. The first Vande Bharat services on this route were flagged off in 2025, with direct Jammu-Srinagar services beginning in April 2026, finally integrating the valley into the national rail network. This all-weather link is a game-changer, especially during winter when heavy snowfall often closes the Jammu-Srinagar national highway, making the train a more reliable option.
The Vande Bharat Route and Timings
The Vande Bharat Express dramatically cuts the journey time between Jammu Tawi and Srinagar to under five hours, a significant improvement over the 8-11 hours required by road. As of August 2026, two Vande Bharat trains are already operational, offering four daily services between the two cities. For instance, train number 26401 departs Jammu Tawi at 6:20 AM and reaches Srinagar at 11:10 AM. Another service leaves Jammu in the afternoon. Due to immense popularity and high occupancy, Indian Railways has already increased the number of coaches on these trains and has approved a third Vande Bharat service to meet the demand. This new service will also include a stop at Udhampur, a long-standing request from locals that will further enhance connectivity.
An Engineering Marvel of a Journey
The journey itself is a breathtaking experience, showcasing some of India's most incredible engineering feats. The route passes over the Chenab Rail Bridge, the world's highest railway arch bridge, which stands taller than the Eiffel Tower. Passengers will also travel through the Anji Khad Bridge, India's first cable-stayed railway bridge, and numerous tunnels, including an 11.2-km marvel under the Pir Panjal range. The train winds through scenic landscapes of the Shivalik foothills and Himalayan ranges, offering passengers spectacular views from large windows. This journey is not just about reaching a destination; it's an adventure through one of the most picturesque and challenging railway lines ever built.
What to Expect Onboard
The Vande Bharat trains for Kashmir are specially designed to handle the region's climate. They are equipped with 'winterisation' technology to operate smoothly in sub-zero temperatures. This includes self-regulating heating cables for water pipelines and heated windshields to prevent fogging, ensuring reliability even in harsh weather. Inside, passengers can expect modern amenities like AC Chair Car (CC) and Executive Chair Car (EC) classes, airline-style rotatable seats, onboard Wi-Fi for infotainment, and catering services. The coaches are designed for comfort and offer a premium travel experience, allowing you to relax and enjoy the stunning views.
How to Plan and Book Your Trip
Booking tickets for the Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat is straightforward. You can book them through the official IRCTC website or app, just like any other train. Bookings typically open 60 days in advance. Fares for the AC Chair Car generally range from ₹715 to ₹880, while the Executive Chair Car costs between ₹1,320 and ₹1,515, inclusive of catering charges. The operational trains currently stop at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, Reasi, and Banihal, with the upcoming third service also stopping at Martyr Captain Tushar Mahajan station in Udhampur. Given the high demand, it is advisable to book your tickets well in advance, especially during peak tourist seasons.
