The benefits of a high-protein diet are most apparent in specific groups, such as athletes and highly active individuals. For these people, the amino acids from protein are used effectively for muscle building and repair. However, for a person with a desk job who exercises infrequently, the body may not need that extra protein. The review suggests that this excess can, over time, promote inflammation and metabolic issues. This is where personal context becomes crucial; what works for a bodybuilder is not necessarily optimal for a sedentary office worker.
What 'Personal Context' Means for You
So, what factors determine your ideal protein intake? The most significant are age, body size, and, most importantly, activity level. Older adults, for instance, often need more protein to combat age-related muscle loss, a condition known as sarcopenia. General recommendations often suggest around 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight for a healthy adult, but this can increase to 1.2 to 1.6 grams or more for active people and some older adults. Rethinking 'More Is Better'
The diet industry often promotes a simple 'more is better' message, leading to the proliferation of protein-fortified foods that may not be necessary for the average consumer. The review highlights a hormone called FGF21, which becomes more active when protein intake is lower. This hormone has been linked to improved metabolic function, better blood sugar control, and reduced inflammation. This suggests that constantly flooding your system with very high levels of protein may prevent some of these beneficial processes from occurring, especially if your body doesn't have an immediate use for it, like strenuous muscle repair. The sensible message, as one expert noted in response to the review, is to consume an adequate amount based on your personal needs, not just to maximize intake.

Instead of fixating on hitting a very high protein target, a more balanced approach is likely more beneficial for most people. This involves considering your unique circumstances. A simple way to start is by using the baseline recommendation of 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight and adjusting from there based on your activity level and age. Pay attention to protein sources as well. Lean meats, fish, dairy, and eggs are excellent, but so are plant-based sources like lentils, beans, tofu, and nuts, which are staples in many Indian diets.
